Comments about 3/4" KA-90 Aluminum / Zinc Anode Rod:

I bought this to get ride of the sulfur smell( rotten eggs) from my hot water. This can be a common problem for those on well water. The smell disappeared in about a day and after a week is still gone. Hopefully it stays gone.

Did Not Eliminate Rotten Egg Smell

By Z-man

Comments about 3/4" KA-90 Aluminum / Zinc Anode Rod:

I installed this aluminum/ zinc anode rod in a 5 yr old 40 gallon water heater. I used bleach in the tank while I had the old anode rod removed. Once the new rod was installed, the smell was gone but only for a few days. My water system includes a well, whole house 3 stage water filter, water boss water softener and 40 gallon water heater. For the extra money spent, more than the magnesium anode rod, the aluminum/zinc rod was not worth it since I still have the rotten egg smell.

Comments about 3/4" KA-90 Aluminum / Zinc Anode Rod:

On advice from AO Smith we replaced the original anode with this one which is designed to discourage growth of things like iron bacteria that give the water a musty smell. So far so good!

Smelly Water Solution?

By old50grit

Comments about 3/4" KA-90 Aluminum / Zinc Anode Rod:

Bought this Aluminum rod after checking AO Smith web site for details. This is the second rod to replace existing rod which is 3 to 4 years old. Disappointing feature of these rods is that they erode more quickly at the top near the nut so that they can drop off if not inspected and replaced periodically. This rod is supposed to help remedy Sulphur-rotten egg smell in well water which does not disappear even if both iron remover and water softener are used as is my set-up. The Standard AO Smith rod in my 7 year old tank was Zinc, which in my experience, eroded after the first 2 years, leaving a significant amount of green and white "gravel" in the bottom of the HW tank. The material eroded from the rod has to go somewhere, so becomes a gravel deposit in the bottom of the tank, interfering with the heating of my natural gas fired tank. This gravel came out when I did my twice a year power drain and flush of the tank. The AO Smith hot line technician suggested use of the Aluminum Rod. The green gravel is gone with use of the Aluminum rod as is the dark green water that was at the bottom of the tank when flushed. The Sulphur smell (Iron Bacteria) still exists to some extent with the Aluminum rod and is also a function of the water temperature. The hotter the water near the faucet, the less smell with my gravity based recirc system. Also, the smell disappears for a few days after a tank flush. Look for water tanks like Bradford White that advertise a dip tube with special turbulators to keep the stagnant water from collecting at the bottom. As far as using an anode rod at all, I keep using one because it is a sacrifical item to prevent any other metal items in the tank from eroding. The lining might be glass but the fittings to the tank are metal. They wouldn't put those rods in the tank for no reason as they do cost money. My hope is to make this AO Smith water tank last another 10 years.

what is the size of the hex head and is this a standard size?

      A:

a 15/16" socket is needed to undo the hex head. I also suggest a long 1/2"sq drive ratchet handle or equivalent long breaker bar to get proper leverage to break the fitting loose.

I don't recall the size, but I was able to use one of my standard SAE sockets.

      A:

Any model should be able to use the listed anode rod, as long as the unit takes a standard anode and not one attached to the hot water nipple.
