Description for AO Smith GAHH-40

It's a simple fact: the Effex is the most efficient and advanced conventional vent gas water heater on the market. This makes it an ideal choice for homeowners who want to replace their older, inefficient water heater without the hassle. This ENERGY STAR® compliant water heater also comes with another irresistible benefit: significant savings on utility bills.

The high efficiency performance of the Effex model is possible thanks to its patented air intake system. Air is pushed into the combustion chamber creating a pressurized environment. Due to this "turbo charge" effect, tighter baffling is incorporated in the flue design to slow down the hot gas as it travels through the water heater. This results in more heat transferred to the water and less energy wasted.

EASY INSTALLATION!
Weary of hassles involved in a high efficiency water heater installation? With the Effex, there's not much to worry about. For starters, it uses standard water and gas connections. It easily connects to existing B-vent on replacements, and it can be common vented. No wonder it is known as effortless.

Features

  • PRESSURIZED COMBUSTION SYSTEM: Exclusive and patented pressurized combustion chamber with an advanced air intake blower delivers superior efficiency. Much like a turbocharger, the blower distributes an optimum air-to-gas mixture pushing exhaust gases through the highly restricted flue baffle. The end result is the most efficient atmospheric gas product on the market with a .70 Energy Factor (EF).
  • INSTALLATION FRIENDLY: Allows for easy replacement of standard atmospheric vent heaters. Easily connects to existing B-vent.
  • FAN-ASSISTED, CATEGORY 1 APPLIANCE
  • 24V ELECTRONIC CONTROLS: Tighter differential for more consistent hot water delivery.
  • ELECTRONIC IGNITION: The durable hot surface ignitor eliminates pilot relight issues (no standing pilot).
  • LCD USER INTERFACE: Easy-to-read, eye level display. Simple temperature settings and adjustments. Service diagnostics are in plain text.
  • POWERED ANODE ROD: Powered anodes are non-sacrificial, so they do not deplete over time. Additionally, they provide exceptional performance in all water conditions.
  • MEETS ENERGY-EFFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR MOST GAS UTILITY REBATE PROGRAMS AND MEETS ENERGY STAR® REQUIREMENTS
  • DURABLE TAMPER-RESISTANT BRASS DRAIN VALVE
  • DYNACLEAN DIFFUSER DIP TUBE: Helps reduce lime and sediment buildup, maximizes hot water output. Made from long-lasting PEX cross-linked polymer.
  • GREEN CHOICE® GAS BURNER: Patented "Eco-Friendly" Green Choice® gas burner reduces NOx emissions by 33% compared to standard burners and meets low NOx requirements of less than 40ng/j.
  • CSA CERTIFIED AND ASME RATED T&P RELIEF VALVE
  • 6-YEAR LIMITED TANK AND PARTS WARRANTY

PLEASE NOTE: The product weighs 157 lbs. and may require the use of a

I installed this unit myself as a direct replacement for a 13 year old A.O. Smith unit which was just beginning to leak. I figured the old unit was on it's last leg (though it never gave us any issues)and I wanted to install a more-efficient unit. Major Points:1. The Effex is Made in the U.S.A. (South Carolina to be exact). I despise anything made in china, so it was satisfying to find the Effex to be made in the good ol' U.S.2. The Effex was taller than the old unit, so some vent reworking was required. 3. I used two American-made Brasscraft brand "Copper-Flex" ([@])brand water lines with a compression fitting installed at one end of each line.4. I replaced the water supply shutoff valve since the original was leaking (needed to cut the copper water lines above the valve anyway since the Effex stands tall).5. Following the directions, after the water, gas, and vent lines were all hooked up, I plugged the unit in and set it to 120 degrees F; the fan kicked on for 5 seconds, then shut off (the display threw a "clean screen" and pressure switch code). I did a power cycle using the switch on the side of the burner control module; again, the blower fan kicked on for 5 seconds and then it stopped, throwing the same error codes. The unit continued to attempt a light-off on its own, with the fan kicking on about once a minute. After a few minutes of this, it lit off and hasn't missed a beat since.6. A.O. Smith recommends a max water temp of 120 degrees F, but we found that to be way too hot for us, so we kicked it down to 115 and it is still hotter than we need, but it is probably good keeping it hot enough to kill bacteria in the washing machine and dish-washer, so we won't lower it any further. The Effex is an over-achiever and I can't wait to see my gas bill drop a little bit.7. The blower-fan (I call it a supercharger) makes a little "noise" in the same context that an American-made V8 (or Italian V10) makes "noise". It is not so loud to be intrusive.

Wow. Okay, first of all, A+ to Pex for getting us the unit in a timely way.

PROS:
- efficient
- modern control panel
- easy installation
- fast reheat
- name brand

CONS:
- LOUD LOUD LOUD air intake fan! For basement or garage install only!
- requires a wall outlet
- less hot water than we're used to with old cheap tank of same capacity

Installers were very impressed with this unit. Remarked a few times at what an amazing machine it was for the price, etc. Installatio went in without a problem. You'll need a wall outlet though, which wasn't clear to us when we ordered it.

That said, the burner has an air supply fan that sounds like a vacuum cleaner or super loud hair dryer every time it runs to heat the water. As in several times a day. It's way too loud for living-space installation. This thing really is meant to be in a garage or basement at best. We searched other online reviews after we discovered this fact and wished we had done so before ordering.

Additionally, it doesn't seem to give us as much hot water for a bath as our cheap-o old 40gal that we replaced. We were expecting the opposite. So.. smaller baths than we're used to, but it heats up pretty fast.

CONCLUSION:
Great efficient water heater for the money with a name everyone seems to trust. Incredibly loud fan so not for installation in living space. Good performance for the money, but man is this thing loud. Supposedly that's what you get with an efficient tank.

Very effecient, easy install

Comments about 40 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Effex High Efficiency Residential Gas Water Heater:

I bought this to replace an old inefficient water heather in my 5 bath house. We had a little trouble with delivery, but it did eventually arrive. We were constantly running out of hot water with only a 40gal gas heater. I thought about a larger unit, but I decided to take a different route. I'm now using it conjunction with a electric tankless that feeds 85 degree water into this 40gal heater. The recovery rate is so good that we don't run out of hot water anymore and our utility bill was cut in half. This unit will pay for itself in short order. It is pretty loud, sounds like a hairdryer when the unit is running, but ours is in a basement mechanical room so it's no bother to anyone.

After 13 Days of operation the Flame Sense/Hot Surface Igniter Assembly failed. We have been without hot water for 2 days.

It is too soon to give a fair rating for the product.

AO Smith was excellent in technical support and shipping the part over-nite, a Certified AO Smith Specialist is on his way to install it.

Comments about 40 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Effex High Efficiency Residential Gas Water Heater:

Received my AO Smith 40gallon Gahh water heater in good condition,no damage to heater or carton.Had a plumber install.Plumber said it was one of the easiest ones he had done. He hooked it up & flipped it on & it took off after a couple cycles no problems & its running great. Was a little worried at first about the fan motors noise upon reading the reviews, but no problem, makes the noise of a hair dryer on a low setting.Me & wife had no problems talking in a normal tone standing next to it while it ran.Comes with a 9 foot electrical cord for the fan motor. The quality of the tank was not lacking,Just as good as the 21yr old AO Smith that it replaced.Replaced the old one due to lime build up.Had no problems with family taking 15min hot showers back to back, plenty of hot water left.Have the thermostat set at 115f Looking forward to saving on the gas bill. Also had no problems out of Pex supply they where great.

Very good upgrade

Comments about 40 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Effex High Efficiency Residential Gas Water Heater:

This is an awesome water water. When my plumber came to install it, he even had to step back and say that this is a very good tank. Like the others say, it does make some noise, but not suc a problem for me since its in the basement, and normally just turns on when someone is taking a shower. But performance wise, it is incredible, I normally take long hot showers, and my other water heater, same size and kind, would give me about 25 minutes before i had luke warm water. This one, after 25 minutes, it still had lots left. I could easily have 2 people take 25 minute hot showers with still hot water left. It's a very good tank and I would recommend this to anyone that wants the most efficient type of tank that can just be replaced with out having to do any other modifications. This replaced a 25 year old tank, and it fit right in with no modifications. I paid about $500 for the install including an expansion tank.
