Description for AO Smith GAHH-50

It's a simple fact: the Effex is the most efficient and advanced conventional vent gas water heater on the market. This makes it an ideal choice for homeowners who want to replace their older, inefficient water heater without the hassle. This ENERGY STAR® compliant water heater also comes with another irresistible benefit: significant savings on utility bills.

The high efficiency performance of the Effex model is possible thanks to its patented air intake system. Air is pushed into the combustion chamber creating a pressurized environment. Due to this "turbo charge" effect, tighter baffling is incorporated in the flue design to slow down the hot gas as it travels through the water heater. This results in more heat transferred to the water and less energy wasted.

EASY INSTALLATION!
Weary of hassles involved in a high efficiency water heater installation? With the Effex, there's not much to worry about. For starters, it uses standard water and gas connections. It easily connects to existing B-vent on replacements, and it can be common vented. No wonder it is known as effortless.

Features

  • PRESSURIZED COMBUSTION SYSTEM: Exclusive and patented pressurized combustion chamber with an advanced air intake blower delivers superior efficiency. Much like a turbocharger, the blower distributes an optimum air-to-gas mixture pushing exhaust gases through the highly restricted flue baffle. The end result is the most efficient atmospheric gas product on the market with a .70 Energy Factor (EF).
  • INSTALLATION FRIENDLY: Allows for easy replacement of standard atmospheric vent heaters. Easily connects to existing B-vent.
  • FAN-ASSISTED, CATEGORY 1 APPLIANCE
  • 24V ELECTRONIC CONTROLS: Tighter differential for more consistent hot water delivery.
  • ELECTRONIC IGNITION: The durable hot surface ignitor eliminates pilot relight issues (no standing pilot).
  • LCD USER INTERFACE: Easy-to-read, eye level display. Simple temperature settings and adjustments. Service diagnostics are in plain text.
  • POWERED ANODE ROD: Powered anodes are non-sacrificial, so they do not deplete over time. Additionally, they provide exceptional performance in all water conditions.
  • MEETS ENERGY-EFFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR MOST GAS UTILITY REBATE PROGRAMS AND MEETS ENERGY STAR® REQUIREMENTS
  • DURABLE TAMPER-RESISTANT BRASS DRAIN VALVE
  • DYNACLEAN DIFFUSER DIP TUBE: Helps reduce lime and sediment buildup, maximizes hot water output. Made from long-lasting PEX cross-linked polymer.
  • GREEN CHOICE® GAS BURNER: Patented "Eco-Friendly" Green Choice® gas burner reduces NOx emissions by 33% compared to standard burners and meets low NOx requirements of less than 40ng/j.
  • CSA CERTIFIED AND ASME RATED T&P RELIEF VALVE
  • 6-YEAR LIMITED TANK AND PARTS WARRANTY

PLEASE NOTE: The product weighs 171 lbs. and may require the use of a
lift gate.
If you do require a lift gate at your delivery, you'll have the option to add this FREE of charge when you checkout.

I got this water heater to replace a 15 year old unit. The old one still worked and didn't leak but had very poor temperature control. The control band of its manual gas valve thermostat was unacceptably large, about 25-30 degrees, meaning that the temp would decline 30 degrees when the unit was inactive, then heat up 30 degrees when the burner cycled on. This led to many lukewarm first showers in the morning.

So I had high hopes for this AO Smith unit with electronic digital controls... and it didn't disappoint. It keeps a much narrower band of temperature control so I always have a nice hot shower first thing in the morning. It's about time!

It also has a MUCH higher efficiency rating (.7 vs .54) than my old one so it should dave me a few $$. Another benefit was that I got the higher efficiency with a unit that was just about "plug and play" with my existing gas connection and type B vent.

The main downside is that the small blower that assists the supply of combustion air is a little loud, sort of reminescent of a hair dryer... but not quite that loud. So depending on where you need to install the water heater that may or may not be an issue for you. Mine is in a downstairs utility room so I don't hear it. The onboard 24V transformer (similar to what you have on your furnace to run the controls) also hums more than most, but again, it is not an issue with my install location.

Only other question mark is durability and reliability of the electronics. It is a lot more complicated than a typical gas water heater, but similar controls and ignitors function reliably in gas furnaces. Time will tell....

BTW, PEX Supply gave great service and fast shipping. What's not to like?

Pros:
- Energy Efficient/Energy Star Rated.
- Easy to install like any other tank water heater.

Cons:
The fan on the side of the water heater is very small but very very loud. Sound of fan comes up thru my duct work and very annoying never mind standing in close proximity to it. I would not recommend this product for the noise factor alone. Sounds like a loud blow dryer. The sound is not subtle and not something you are going to get used to.

As an aside, had a great shopping experience with Pexsupply.com and will shop here again.

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Effex High Efficiency Residential Gas Water Heater:

The new heater arrived in great shape, was installed by a professional and fired right up. The heater is in the basement and the noise is not an issue. As everyone mentions, it sounds like a hair dryer on low (only when it is heating the water, not at rest) and it's certainly not a deal breaker with how efficient it is. It has a very fast response time and with 5 people in the house we had plenty of hot water.

Arrived 3 weeks after order date, which frankly, I could live with. But when we installed it, it would not power on. Called AO Smith, and MFG could also not figure out how to get unit to work. Low and behold, it's some kind of failed electronic part which will require a complete gutting of the unit by a third party dear from AO Smith. Phone support was useless. You know - I would expect, that spending a substantial amount on a unit, especially a large one that has to be shipped a long distance, would make AO Smith a little more cautious about testing their units so THEY WORK when they ship. But I guess not. Guess who is without hot water until someone finds the part (oh, yeah, no one has that either) this guy.

Stay Away from A.O. Smith GAHH-50!

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Effex High Efficiency Residential Gas Water Heater:

I ordered a new GAHH-50 from PexSupply and had it installed by a professional plumber yesterday. The Water Heater would not start (Control Display flashing with error message). After a ton of troubleshooting that lasted a few hours, I got the unit to work, just to find out, a couple of hours later, that the unit had another error ("P-ANODE" flashing). Customer Support just goes by the troubleshooting guide, which I have read several times now, so not really a value-add to a customer. Bottom line, a new unit should just work. Now I have to spend more time and $$ chasing and fixing this. What a letdown by A.O. Smith!

When a H.E. wall vent won't work.

By Joliet Jake

from Southwest of Chicago

Verified Buyer

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Effex High Efficiency Residential Gas Water Heater:

Pex online info is quite useful with evaluating different models and reviews from others.
I was really looking for a 90+ efficient condensing tank model, but the basement layout was not conducive to coring holes for venting. This model seemed appropriate with aiming for efficiency, but having to deal with legacy installation limitations.
Delivery came a week early – even during the horrendous 2013 Midwest winter.
Though the delivery was nothing like the pex video, the driver had it right by the garage door when I got outside. The heater box was w/o damage and there were no dings or issues when un-boxed.
Installation was easy to perform by myself, even with having to modify the gas line and copper piping. The gas line was due to the gas inlet and fan duct conflict, the copper was due to existing valve age.
The vent does sound like a low speed dryer as mentioned by others; this has not been a concern being in the basement. A customized shop vac filter and shroud would quite it.
For three of us, water temp has been consistent and the unit has good quick response with starting early when water is being used. The thermostat programing was simple and fortunately have not experienced any error code messages after 2 weeks of service.
Thinking of wrapping this one with the old insulation blanket, but all areas have been cool to the touch as compare to the old. Need to borrow an IR gun to see if this is worthwhile.
Still way too early for any gas noticeable savings over the 17 yr old one, especially being in the middle of a Chicago winter.

Since the thermostat and fan use electricity, will this unit function normally during a power outage? Will I still have hot water?

No, you will not have hot water during an outage unless you have a

      A:

I bought this unit because I wanted the most efficient system that I
could get to replace my old traditional gas water heater. I looked at
a lot of options and many involved big changes in the plumbing or
venting or both. It is my understanding that this unit vents the same
as any of your traditional home gas water heaters. I am sure you can
check with the manufacturer for more specific information but for me the
system was very easy to install and required NO changes to my existing
system. I did not measure but did notice a smaller gas bill and the
system holds the temperature better than my old water heater. One
thing to note is that the water heater does have a small fan and
requires a 120VAC electrical outlet. For me the outlet was available
and not a problem. The other thing about the fan is it does make some
sound kind of like a gas furnace. My unit is in the basement so the
sound does not bother me but if the tank were positioned very close to
me it would probably annoy me.
I really like this unit. I believe it is also sold under the Sears
Kenmore name but for several hundred dollars more. This might be good
for you to know if you ever need parts you have the Sears network to
help you get them if needed.
      Hope that helps.

This system will use the typical 4 inch natural draw of other gas water heaters. The system compresses the heat, back into some second stage heating chambers, thus doubling the heat usage. The exhaust comes out at normal rates. So far the return cycles have been very fast for me. Mid-winter showers for our family of four have removed all hot water shortages.

This water heater is designed as a direct replacement to chimney vented water heaters. Instead of pulling the air out like a direct vent water heater, this water heater is super charged on the intake side to force the gases through the heat exchanger. The result is a high efficiency water heater that can be vented into a chimney, eliminating the need to run a pvc direct vent. Your only vent option as far as I know is 3" or 4" b-vent pipe(http://www.pexsupply.com/Hart-Cooley-B-Vent-Fittings-14710000). I hope this helps.

No, it needs 120 VAC. But you can probably run it off an inverter powered by a car battery, or perhaps off a good size computer uninterruptable power supply. You would only need to do this once or twice a day to have reasonably warm water, depending on usage, of course. Anyway, I plan to do this if/when we have an extended power outage.

Yes you will need electric. It could not have been easier as it came with a plug attached so all you have to do is plug it into a nearby outlet. It uses power for both ignition and for a fan/vent used to more efficiently burn the gas. It also has an active anode to protect the tank. The active anode will not need replacement which is another plus over the old tank. Hope that helps.

I had the same question as it is not completely obvious from the instructions. I just installed my unit last week and found that it was pre-wired with a regular ~10ft 120v 3-prong electrical cord. I just wired a new outlet next to the HWH and plugged it in (I'm not sure, but some building codes may require it to be on a dedicated circuit).

This model is not currently available in propane gas. This product does not qualify for the tax rebate. To qualify for the tax rebate, the energy factor has to be over .82; this unit has an energy factor of .7.
