I purchased this unit to replace my 11-year old A.O. Smith ProMax water heater that had a slow leak. The ground shipping took 3-weeks to deliver; however, it only took 3-hrs from unpacking to installation in an attic before I had nice crispy clean hot water. The order process was so easy and delivery to my home was a plus. I'm looking forward to getting another 6+ years from this new A.O. Smith water heater.

Comments about 50 Gallon ProMax 6 Yr Warranty Residential Gas Water Heater - Tall Model:

Website details were 100% accurate and was certain I was buying a unit that would work in my location. This unit replaced my older smaller AO Smith unit that lasted several years longer than the expected service life. Also able to operate this unit in the low temp setting with ample hot water.

Comments about 50 Gallon ProMax 6 Yr Warranty Residential Gas Water Heater - Tall Model:

I got 15 years out of my old 40 gallon 6 year I bought from Lowe's, I sell to schools for a living and most have AO Smith water heaters, in my area the only place I could buy an AO Smith was through an independent plummer, Pex had a good price and they shipped to my home, I can't fit a water heater in my car! My heater was "dinged" during shipping, Pex credited me and the heater works great, the extra 10 gallons is nice too! Plus I like it's made in USA. I used the pipe insulation supplied with the heater and it helps with heat loss around the pipe and pressure relief valve.

High quality water heater!

Comments about 50 Gallon ProMax 6 Yr Warranty Residential Gas Water Heater - Tall Model:

Bought my house last year. Wanted to upgrade the existing AO Smith 40gal water heater that was installed when my house was built (1999). Nothing wrong with it, just wanted to put a larger, more modern unit in so I purchased this one from PEX.

It arrived quickly with zero freight damage. Had a co-worker (licensed plumber) install it within a few days after it arrived. It wasn't much bigger than my old water heater, and works well thus far. I feel better knowing exactly when my water heater was installed, and that it's a more modern and efficient unit.

I'm very satisfied with PEXsupply.com's customer service, shipping, and product selection! I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again.

Will this heater operate correctly at 7500 foot elevation?

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

Yes, the heater should operate correctly at 7500ft. Above 7700 feet the burner will require modification from the installer.

    Q:

How to drain 50 gallon promax
Asked on 6/24/2013 by Tom from Jacksonville fl.

    1 answer

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

Hook a garden hose to the hose bib on the bottom side of the tank and place
the other end outside or into a drain. Turn the thermostat to the off
position. Turn the water off to the unit. Open a hot water faucet as far
away from the unit as possible and leave it open. Open the release valve on
the upper side and then open the hose bib valve to the right of the
thermostat. It will take a while so be patient. Make sure your hose is
flowing downhill or buy a small pump that connects to your drill and pump it
out if you don't want to wait. There about $10 at Home Depot.
After it's empty, I turn the water back on for a few minutes to flush out
any loose left overs. Then shut the water off again and reverse what I did
in the beginning except don't light the water heater yet and, I leave the
hot water faucet open AND I open the cold water faucet at the same time.
This lets the trapped air bubbles escape and prevents the pipes from
knocking when the water is turned on and off. After you don't hear any more
air escaping, close the hot and cold faucet and let the water heater fill
up. You can light the water heater again anytime after you close the
faucets. After the water stops running into it, open the hot and cold
faucets for about 30 seconds then close again. Give it an hour or so and
your water should be hot and running clear from the faucet. If it's not
clear, you'll need to get a special cleaner to loosen the scale and redo the
      process.

    Q:

On the GCV-50-300 model it says to drain and flush the tank every 6 months. It tells you to hook a hose to the drain valve and then open the valve. This model has a tamper proof drain valve suggesting what? That you should not open it.There is no handle on the valve to open it but you can use a flat head screw driver to open the valve. Is this the procedure you are supposed to use?
Asked on 4/21/2012 by Flame from Chicago IL.

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The drain valve on this unit can and should be used as needed. It is tamper-proof to prevent small children from using it.

Answered on 5/4/2012 by PexSupply Staff from NY
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

Yes. This is the procedure. Beats having little mitts draining the tank when turning a knob during the course of their day's fun and learning. Beats flooding the house as most people do not connect the drain valve to a drain as a matter of course.

    Q:

The label on my tank states model # GCV 50 100, is this the same as model GCV 50?
    Asked on 3/3/2012 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The 100 is the series number. A.O. Smith makes minor changes in design every several years, and current natural gas models are Series 300.

    Q:

I have a 50gal ProMax, but I can't tell if it is a 6yr or 10yr warranty model. Where is the warranty listed on the water heater?
    Asked on 2/1/2012 by Mark

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The GCV units have a six-year warranty. XCV models have a ten-year warranty. The model number should be listed either on the water heater itself, or on the original invoice (if you still have it).

    Q:

I own a 7-yr. old pro max gcv-50 and it drains very slowly and has begun to leak regularly through the relief valve. Is this indicative of imminent failure? Is it servicable, or do I need to replace it?
    Asked on 5/20/2011 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

If you have an expansion tank on the system, the tank may need to be replaced. Another possibility is that the relief valve has a bad seal and needs to be replaced.

    Q:

Seem to be running out of hot water sooner and is getting worse. Could it be a build up of calcium and such so it is not filling up the full 50 gallons? We use to be able to fill the bathtub and then shower right after but now we have to wait quite a long time before we have hot water to shower
Asked on 4/21/2011 by waukesha32 from Spring Lake,MI

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

It sounds to us as if you may have calcium built-up on the bottom of the tank that is not allowing the burner to heat the water as rapidly as it used too.
