Description for Amtrol 140735

With modern plumbing codes mandating backflow prevention, thermal expansion can cause pressure buildup in domestic water systems. When demand is put upon a potable water system, hot water is drawn from the water heater. Cold water from the supply line enters the water heater to replenish it. The cold water is heated to replace the hot water used. With the installation of a backflow preventer, check valve or pressure reducing valve on the supply line, the water heater and the system piping form a closed plumbing system under pressure. As the water is heated, thermal expansion occurs. Pressure increases until the relief valve opens and the expanded water spills from the water heater. This spillage results in wasted energy and a potential safety hazard.

I used the product on a community well system at my hot water heater location to stop thermal expansion and bleeding water out of the relief valve.

Comments about THERM-X-SPAN T-5 Expansion Tank (2 Gallon Volume):

Great unit! The written directions that came with the unit do not refer to needing to pressurize the tank to the same pressure as the water you have. The video at the web site: http://www.amtrol.com/troubleshooting.htm does refer to this process. The unit was pressurized to 4.5psi when I received it so it took a while to pump it up to the 80 psi water pressure. Other than that, the price and performance was/is great.

Comments about THERM-X-SPAN T-5 Expansion Tank (2 Gallon Volume):

Our water heater was building up so much pressure that the pressure relief valve was opening up. We installed a pressure reducing valve that caused us to have problems with flow. Installing this tank resolved our issues with out affecting flow or having to reduce our pressure. I wish I had purchased this tank before trying the pressure reducing valve.

The tank's pressure should match the pressure in your system. This tank comes pre-pressurized to 40 psi.

The tank does have a preset pressure from the factory, 45 psi if memory serves, but please check the instruction sheet.
The pressure still needs to be adjusted to equal the setting of the water pressure regulator (pressure reducing valve). The idea is
not to have strain on the tank membrane under normal conditions.
If there's no PRV in the line, the setting has to be equal to the supply pressure, but it can only work if that pressure is below 60 psi
because 60 psi is the maximum allowed for the tank. To adjust the tank pressure, you only need a tire pump and a tire gauge.

The tank does come with a little pressure, but here is what you need to do:
            1. Measure the water pressure in the house. Typically from 35 to 80
psi (if it is more than 80 you should install a pressure regulator)
            2. Use a bicycle pump to pump the pressure of the tank to match the
water pressure. You do NOT need to install the tank before you do this.
Try not to use a standard compressor as it often has oil in the air. The
oil will not come in contact with the drinking water, but it can deteriorate
            the membrane.
            3. Install the tank and you are in business.
            Hope this helps.

Hoe much pressure is the T2 tank suppose to be under? WIll lack of pressure cause water pipe noises? Is normal compressed air ok?

            A:

Proper tank pressure depends on the pressure in your system. This tank comes pre-charged at 40psi. You can change the pressure with normal compressed air. Lack of pressure in the tank can cause noise in the pipes (as can an undersized tank).

I am sure that you already have an answer to this, but here goes:
            1. measure your water pressure and that is the pressure that you should pump the tank to.
            2. Yes
            3. Yes although it should not have oil in it (as some do)
