I ordered about 2 dozen of these Boshart black nipples for a domestic boiler installation. most were fine but 2 or 3 were machined incorrectly...the threads were not perpendicular to the center line of the pipe, thus throwing off the piping run.
I would suggest ordering a few spares, just in case.

Good materials, dropped the pipes numerous times and the tread was fine. I've had occasions where I would drop it and the thread would get chopped up

  • 2" x 4" Black Nipple

    Q:

Is this piece a 2" pipe that is 4 inches long. Forgive the ignorance, but some of this can be confusing. Is the first measurement always the diameter of the pipe itself and the 2nd measurement the length? Thanks for any information. :)

      A:

Correct in this instance the 2" would be the Inside Diameter of the pipe. the 4 in would be the length of the pipe

Answered on 12/22/2015 by Supplyhouse Staff from NY

      A:

you are correct. The diameter is 2"; the length is 4"

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

YES! This pipe is 2" wide (big) and 4" long.  See right-side of product
display (link below) and you will see longer versions of the same size
      (2") pipe.
      Hope this helps.

does the nipple give off a black residue when touched?

      A:

All black nipples had a residue on them when they are new, mostly oil from manufacture making product. It will also create discolored water when running water through it, that's why it is not used in water supply, except boiler app. Where water is treated.
      Hope that helps!

    Q:

Based on all the answers -- the length of the thread is either 3/4, 5/8 or 1/2. If anyone can provide the true thread length -- I'd be one happy camper... thanks

      A:

The reviews and Q&A are the same for all sizes of a single product. You
might be looking at 1/2" x 3" black nipple, but a review or Q&A might apply
to a 1/8" close nipple. The threaded length is standard in each case. For
any 1/2" NPT, the standard visible external threaded length is about 3/4".

Overall length is 12" there is about 10" of none thread between the 2 ends

Answered on 11/23/2013 by I.E.G from Pa
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

No - it is taper threaded like all pipe thread. The space in the middle
      varies on each piece.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

The picture is misleading - it looks like it is for a 1/2" close nipple,
not for a 12". The threaded portion of a 1/2" nipple will be about 5/8"
on each end. The rest will be unthreaded.

      Answered on 11/12/2013 by Anonymous
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

      Hi,
The nipple in question is not continually threaded and has an unthreaded area of roughly 1/2". A fully threaded nipple is called a "close" nipple. Keep in mind the threads are opposite directions on both ends (each end is a right handed thread). I hope this helps answer your question.

This is a 12" long nipple. It is only threaded about 3/4" on each end. The remaining portion is unthreaded.

      It's continuous

      Answered on 11/12/2013 by Anonymous
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

It is not. The picture is generic. You've selected a 1/2" x 12" nipple,
which is 12 inches long. The threading is pipe thread (NPT) which has a
taper to it so it is not possible for the threading to be continuous. Only
the end 1 inch or so is threaded.

      A:

You should have about 3/4"thread on each end with approx. 10 1/2"of smooth or unthreaded pipe in between .
That would be for a 1/2"x 12" nipp.

When dealing with galvanized or iron pipe all measurements are ID. The 1-1/2" x 5-1/2" Black Nipple would have 1-1/2 ID and a 2" OD

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

Pipe sides are approximately ID. The standard says that tubing sizes are OD
and pipe sizes are ID. But the exact inside diameter of all pipe varies
with the strength of the pipe, that is, the thickness of the wall (called
the "schedule" of the pipe). So schedule 40 pipe, for example, the lighter
wall pipe, will have a slightly larger ID than Schedule 80, the thicker wall
of which occludes some of the ID.
The exception to this rule is hard drawn copper water tube, sometimes
incorrectly called copper pipe. Copper water tube sizes are again
approximately ID. Soft copper tubing, which comes in rolls is available in
either pipe diameters (ID) or tubing diameters (OD).
      Confused? No wonder.
