The TTW1® model is power vented for positive exhaust. It offers greater installation flexibility with the ability to vent through a wall or roof, with either 2 or 3 PVC, ABS or CPVC pipe.

Features:

  • ENERGY STAR® Qualified - These models qualify for the January 1st, 2009 minimum ENERGY STAR® EF requirement, as well as most utility rebate programs.
  • Advanced ScreenLok® Technology Flame Arrestor Design - Flame arrestor is designed to prevent ignition of flammable vapor outside of the water heater.
  • Flammable Vapor Sensor - Electronic sensor prevents burner operation if flammable vapors are detected. The sensor will also prevent operation if there is ongoing flammable vapor burn inside the combustion chamber.
  • Maintenance Free - No regular cleaning of air inlet openings or flame arrestor is required under normal conditions.
  • Sight Window - Offers a view into the combustion chamber to observe the operation of the pilot and burner.
  • Factory installed Hydrojet® Total Performance System - Cold water inlet sediment reducing device helps prevent sediment build up in tank. This increases first hour delivery, while minimizing temperature build up at top of tank.
  • Vitraglas® Lining - Bradford White tanks are lined with an exclusively engineered enamel formula that provides superior tank protection from the highly corrosive effects of hot water. This formula (Vitraglas®) is fused to the steel surface by firing at a temperature of over 1600° F.
  • Power Vented Water Heater - Designed for installations where atmospheric units cannot be used. Exhaust gases are vented under positive pressure directly out of the building through the roof or the wall.
  • Powerful Blower Motor - Our significantly quiet design has greater resistance to outside winds and the power to vent in many difficult venting situations.
  • Honeywell Self Diagnostic Electronic Gas Control - Intelligent gas control with spark to pilot ignition system eliminates the constant burning pilot. This results in savings of pilot gas during stand by periods (120 V.A.C.).
    • Enhanced Performance - Proprietary algorithms provide enhanced First Hour Delivery ratings and tighter temperature differentials.
    • Advanced Temperature Control System - Microprocessor constantly monitors and controls burner operation to maintain accurate and consistent water temperature levels.
    • Intelligent Diagnostics - An exclusive green LED light prompts the installer during start-up and provides ten different diagnostic codes to assist in troubleshooting.
    • Pilot On Indication - Flashing green LED provides positive indication that pilot is on.
  • Horizontal and Vertical Venting - With 2" or 3" PVC, ABS or CPVC (Maximum equivalent vent length on reverse side).
  • 1" Non-CFC Foam Insulation - Covers the sides and top, reducing the amount of heat loss. This results in less energy consumption, improved operation efficiencies and jacket rigidity.
  • Water Connections - 3/4" NPT factory installed true dielectric fittings.
  • Factory installed Heat Traps - Design incorporates a flexible disk that reduces heat loss in piping and eliminates the potential for noise generation.
  • Protective Magnesium Rod.
  • Pedestal Base.
  • T&P Relief Valve - Included.
  • Brass Drain Valve - Durable tamper proof design.

Had to shut the hot water off to do some work around the house.
Can't get the striker to strike. They only have 3 companies that service their heaters in LA. No one else wants to touch it.
Though the parts are covered under warrantee, their reps are between $150 and $200 for a service call.
It might have kept working if I hadn't shut it off.

A Model I Like

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System TTW1 Power Vent Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

I purposely sticked with the same model as my original because, "it fit so why quit". It performs beautifully and is dependable. Selfinstallation was a breeze seeing that everything was completely in alignment with the old one, no adjustments at all necessary. A six year tank lasted me eight years. Expecting the same results or better with my new one.

TTW1 50g 40K BTU

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System TTW1 Power Vent Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

The water heater arrived undamaged and in working order. This was a concern of mine since the return shipping would have been expensive. The build quality looks very good. The manuals are good.

The installation was straight forward and the unit is not overly noisy. There is some fan noise so if not in a dedicated utility space this could be an issue.

The water gets very hot -- so be sure to adjust the temperature setting on the controller.

I gave it 4 stars based on the build quality. I hope it provides years of trouble free service.

Great buying experience

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System TTW1 Power Vent Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

This model was out of stock when we ordered, but Pex Supply kept us informed on expected delivery date. Their customer service is outstanding as are their prices. The unit was extremely well-packaged and arrived in perfect condition at the time promised. The freight delivery man was careful and very helpful. We do recommend the liftgate service.

This unit replaced a Bradford White model that was 14 yrs old. The new model has a slightly different configuration. We bought a 24"x24" concrete paver from a bigbox home store and placed the unit on it so we did not have to change out the gas piping--exactly the right height. We put on two new dielectric unions because the bottoms were frozen on the old unit. Sweated the unions to the copper water pipes. We also changed out part of the venting due to the fact the exhaust on the power vent is on the opposite side of the old unit.

This unit is much improved over the old unit. We especially like the rubber boot connecting the venting from the water heater and the Honeywell controls with the trouble shooting LED lights. The fan is also much quieter. All in all, a well-made water heater that is not complicated to install.

Hot water heater expansion tank

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System TTW1 Power Vent Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

This hot water heater was installed by Pulte builders 3 years ago when I purchased my home. Great hot water heater. However, it is installed on the 2nd fl and they never installed an expansion tank. Bradford brochure recommends the expansion tank be installed. Any plumbers comments about this?

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System TTW1 Power Vent Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

This was pretty much a direct replacement for my old Bradford White. It installed easily and fired right up with no flame or other adjustments needed. My previous unit had short legs and the new model was flat on bottom so since the floor was not level I bought a stand and leveled that first before placing the water heater. All connections were straightforward. It was nice that the gas control valve has a place to hold with a wrench to avoid torque when installing the gas line.

    Q:

The manual states that the unit is to be adhered to the floor or mounted on a leg kit that is optional, am I reading that correctly?

I read a review about a check valve included in the box but no instructions on its use, is one needed? thank you

      Hello,
I did not adhere the water heater to the floor. I placed it on floor tile
that I had left over. The heater came with a pressure relief valve. I'm not
familiar with a check valve needed.

      A:

I mounted the Heater on a leg platform and braced the entire unit to two adjacent walls. The only valve I remember is the pressure relief valve. I connected that to a 3/4 inch rigid copper line that was routed to the exterior of the building. I hope this helps.

Doesn't sound like those statements are part of this water heater installation. I might add that installing this water heater involves complex knowledge and installation abilities. Judging from your questions, I recommend you ONLY get a licensed certified installer to do the job. Could go terribly wrong on many fronts.
      Good luck.

    Q:

The height listed is 57 3/8". will this fit in the 66" clearance under my sewer pipe? In other words...is the height listed to the top of the power vent assembly?

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Yes, that is the height to the top of the vent. The height to the top of the unit is 47-1/8".

Answered on 10/26/2011 by PexSupply Staff from NY
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

The 57-3/8" is to the very top of the rubber 3" to 2" exaust adapter. Note that this adapter fits up to either a 2" PVC pipe or a street fitting. E.g., I have a 2" 45 deg street fitting inserted into this 2" rubber outlet. And perhaps more direct to your question, the very top of the power vent assembly is 3" hard plastic that can be adapted directly to 3" PVC pipe using a rubber 3" adapter (not included) and two 3" clamps. Thus the top of the actual power vent assembly is about 55-1/8", not including the 3" to 2" adapter.
