Bradford White's residential, atmospheric vent, extra recovery, energy saver, gas water heater features the Defender Safety System®. This heater utilizes a draft diverter and is atmospherically vented. Extra recovery translates into an increased amount of hot water available at a usable temperature in less time than normal.

Features:

  • Bradford White ICON System - Intelligent gas control with proven millivolt powered technology and built-in piezo igniter. A standard, off the shelf thermopile converts heat energy from the pilot flame into electrical energy to operate the gas valve and microprocessor. No need for external electricity.
    • Enhanced Performance - Proprietary algorithms provide enhanced First Hour Delivery ratings and tighter temperature differentials.
    • Advanced Temperature Control System - Microprocessor constantly monitors and controls burner operation to maintain consistent and accurate water temperature levels.
    • Intelligent Diagnostics - An exclusive green LED light prompts the installer during start-up and provides ten different diagnostic codes to assist in troubleshooting.
    • Pilot On Indication - Flashing green LED provides positive indication that pilot is on.
    • Separate Immersed Thermowell - High strength advanced polymer composite thermowell provides isolation between electric temperature sensor and surrounding water. No need to drain the tank when removing gas valve.
  • Advanced ScreenLok® Technology Flame Arrestor Design - Flame arrestor is designed to prevent ignition of flammable vapor outside of the water heater.
  • Resettable Thermal Switch - Proven and reliable bimetallic switch prevents burner and pilot operation in case of ongoing flammable vapor burn inside of the combustion chamber or restricted air flow.
  • Maintenance Free - No regular cleaning of air inlet openings or flame arrestor is required under normal conditions.
  • Sight Window - Offers a view into the combustion chamber to observe the operation of the pilot and burner.
  • Factory Installed Hydrojet® Total Performance System - Cold water inlet sediment reducing device helps prevent sediment build up in tank. Increases first hour delivery of hot water while minimizing temperature build up in tank.
  • Vitraglas® Lining - Bradford White tanks are lined with a exclusively engineered enamel formula that provides superior protection from the highly corrosive effects of hot water. This formula (Vitraglas®) is fused to the steel surface by firing at a temperature of over 1600ºF.
  • Side Connections - 3/4" NPT tappings allow easy connections for space heating applications (Potable water only).
  • 2" Non-CFC Foam Insulation - Covers the sides and top of tank, reducing the amount of heat loss. This results in less energy consumption, improved operation efficiencies and jacket rigidity (M-1-XR403S has 1").
  • Pedestal Base.
  • Water Connections - 3/4" NPT factory installed true dielectric fittings.
  • Factory Installed Heat Traps.
  • Protective Magnesium Anode Rod.
  • 3x4 "Snap Lock" Draft Diverter - Allows either 3" or 4" vent connections with inputs of 40,000 BTU/Hr or less. Over 40,000 BTU/Hr. has the 4" "Snap Lock" Draft Diverter.
  • T&P Relief Valve - Included.
  • Brass Drain Valve - Tamper proof design.

Comments about 48 Gallon - 65,000 BTU Defender Safety System Extra Recovery Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

Used to provide home hot water as well as hot water for my home heating system (hydroponic). Installation in about an hour with removal of the older Bradford-White unit. Freight carrier was excellent. 7 days from order to delivery to my driveway. Could not be more pleased with the service from Pex.

Hard to find water heater

By Steve340

Comments about 48 Gallon - 65,000 BTU Defender Safety System Extra Recovery Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

I bought this as a replacement for a hydronic furnace heating system that heats the whole house and the water. It was the only one I could find that had the hookups on the side for the furnace water and the hookups on the top for the hot water. Plus, my old one was only 48K BTU and this one is 65K BTU, so it has a nice fast recovery, better than the old one. You can't just buys these thing at the local hardware store!

Excellent Choice

Comments about 48 Gallon - 65,000 BTU Defender Safety System Extra Recovery Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

I purchased this hot water heater to replace a 75 gallon GE hot water heater in a 4-plex I own. It has been in service for about a year and half now and seems to deliver a limitless supply of hot water. I had to replace the orifice to account for the altitude and that was a relatively easy process once I found the orifice.

Water Heater Installation Inst. Poor

By Amateur Plumber

Comments about 48 Gallon - 65,000 BTU Defender Safety System Extra Recovery Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

The water heater is fine. Installation instructions and customer service at Bradford White were poor. I was unable to start the unit because of inadaquate instructions. The service rep started it just fine and charged me $128 because there was nothing wrong with the unit.

This Water Heater is not available in big Box Stores like [@]. By ordering directly from PEX, I was able to save on Shipping and Taxes. They worked around my schedule with shipping and it was shipped as promised. The Shipper brought the appliance into my Garage and allowed me to inspect it while he waited.

Awesome Water Heater

By Scott

from Douglasville, GA

Comments about 48 Gallon - 65,000 BTU Defender Safety System Extra Recovery Energy Saver Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

This baby is efficient and has the fastest recovery of any tank hot water heater I have ever used. It installed really easy with Shark Bite fittings. I highly recommend those for DIY'ers wanting a nice install without sweating copper fittings. I needed to increase the diameter of the exhaust as this is 4" instead of 3" Great product!!!

Easy to install,by professionals.
Only used for several weeks, but seems
to be working properly. "Hot" setting is very hot
so will probably lower.

    Q:

Can I use my current 3 inch exhaust to vent this unit, M-2-XR504T6FBN, or do I need to replace the 3 inch vent with something larger?

      A:

This is a really great water heater with a super fast recovery time because of the higher BTU output. Unfortunately, you will have to upgrade the flue to 4" exhaust to accommodate the higher BTU. Both my furnace and water heater share a utility closet so I only had to increase the diameter from the unit to the T. Hope this helps.

I installed this unit in place of two 50 gallon units and it keeps up with my
families demand fine. But, I had 2 three inch vents in place from my previous
setup so I put a Y above the tank and exhausted it through 2 three inch
vents. One three inch vent is not large enough to vent this unit based on my
      research.

      A:

I'm not a local inspector, but I would say replace your vent with 4
inch as the 3 inch will probably not pass code. That water has a big
65K BTU burner and it really heats the water up fast. If that's what
you got it for, don't skimp on the exhaust even if you don't get it
      inspected.

      Hi Debbie,
The short answer to your question is no. If you look on page 8 of the attachment you will see the maximum BTU's you can vent through a 3" under ideal conditions in 48,000 . Looks like the smallest you can use with this heater is 4" Hope this helps!

I replaced my hot water heater with the more powerful 65,000 btu unit. I am very happy with the better model, because I finally have enough hot water.
Fortunately, I sought the assistance of my Township's Building Inspector, because my old water heater had been installed wrong, and was very unsafe.
The inspector had a code chart of vent pipe sizes to match the size of the heater.
You should speak to your local building inspector to make sure of the right size vent for your heater.
If I remember correctly, I has to change my vent to a 5 inch size. This is an important detail for the safe installation of the heater.
