Bradford White's high efficiency, energy saver, atmospheric vent residential gas water heater features the Defender Safety System® and offers additional insulation and integral heat traps to reduce stand-by heat loss.

Features:

  • Bradford White ICON System - Intelligent gas control with proven millivolt powered technology and built-in piezo igniter. A standard, off the shelf thermopile converts heat energy from the pilot flame into electrical energy to operate the gas valve and microprocessor. No need for external electricity.
    • Enhanced Performance - Proprietary algorithms provide enhanced First Hour Delivery ratings and tighter temperature differentials.
    • Advanced Temperature Control System - Microprocessor constantly monitors and controls burner operation to maintain consistent and accurate water temperature levels.
    • Intelligent Diagnostics - An exclusive green LED light prompts the installer during start-up and provides ten different diagnostic codes to assist in troubleshooting.
    • Pilot On Indication - Flashing green LED provides positive indication that pilot is on.
    • Separate Immersed Thermowell - High strength advanced polymer composite thermowell provides isolation between electric temperature sensor and surrounding water. No need to drain the tank when removing gas valve.
  • Advanced ScreenLok® Technology Flame Arrestor Design - Flame arrestor is designed to prevent ignition of flammable vapor outside of the water heater.
  • Resettable Thermal Switch - Proven and reliable bimetallic switch prevents burner and pilot operation in case of ongoing flammable vapor burn inside of the combustion chamber or restricted air flow.
  • Maintenance Free - No regular cleaning of air inlet openings or flame arrestor is required under normal conditions.
  • Sight Window - Offers a view into the combustion chamber to observe the operation of the pilot and burner.
  • Factory Installed Hydrojet® Total Performance System - Cold water inlet sediment reducing device helps prevent sediment build up in tank. Increases first hour delivery of hot water while minimizing temperature build up in tank.
  • Vitraglas® Lining - Bradford White tanks are lined with a exclusively engineered enamel formula that provides superior protection from the highly corrosive effects of hot water. This formula (Vitraglas®) is fused to the steel surface by firing at a temperature of over 1600ºF.
  • 2" Non-CFC Foam Insulation - Covers the side and top, reducing the amount of heat loss. This results in less energy consumption, improved operation efficiencies and jacket rigidity.
  • Pedestal Base.
  • Water Connections -3/4" NPT factory installed true dielectric fittings.
  • Factory Installed Heat Traps.
  • Protective Magnesium Anode Rod.
  • 3x4 "Snap Lock" Draft Diverter - Allows either 3" or 4" vent connections with inputs of 40,000 BTU/Hr or less.
  • T&P Relief Valve - Included.
  • Brass Drain Valve - Tamper proof design.

We had a bradford White before this unit but it was certainly a plain Jane and often ran out of water. This one however is a whole new bread. Plenty of hot water and fast recovery time. The controls being on the outside for easy access, the Pizo, no match lighting are a big help if getting on you knees is a problem. Installation was on average for a water heater. I highly recommend this water heater. I can't vouch for the fuel savings yet, but if I didn't save a dime I would be happy with the operation of this unit alone. [...]

    Great Water Heater

Comments about 40 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System High Efficiency Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

We had a previous Bradford White water heater that lasted ten years before is developed a small leak somewhere in the fittings. I bought this water heater because it is the same model we had prevously but has more insulation. The fittings were all in in the same locations, but the venting was slightly different. Also, because I bought this model with more insulation, it is a larger diameter, so the pan I had for the old water heater was too small. I have used this water heater for a week now and it works great!

We just purchased another Bradford White natural gas water heater. The 1st one we had lasted us 20 years. I was told by the guy who installed ours that this is one of the best water heaters around. Where I we live, Round Rock TX we have hard water. This product is known to be one of the best to handle this hard water.

Comments about 40 Gallon - 36,000 BTU Defender Safety System Energy Star High Efficiency Residential Water Heater (LP Gas):

This unit was delivered in about a week and installed nicely in about 1.5 hrs. A definite do it yourself job if you are at all mechanically inclined. This unit had a small dent in the side that turned out to be cosmetic only, but Pex discounted the unit and would have replaced if any operational problems were due to the dent. Very good and fast customer service.

I have had this about 3 years now and it works without a hitch. The
main problem with any water heater is that the tank rust out and starts
to leak. However you can achieve a much longer life if you replace the
zinc rod that is located at the top of the boiler every 5 years or so.
They are cheap and easy to replace but nobody seems to do it. The rod
sacrifices itself to keep the tank from rusting. That and about the
same time drain the unit to get the dirt out of the bottom of the tank
it and it may last longer then you think.
This unit can put out some hot water we are never without.

        A:

Yes, this model does not rely on power from the home circuit panel. The only problem would be if you had an interruption in the gas supply or your incoming water line. The pilot light burns continuously and only uses a piezoelectric spark igniter, which is self contained and requires no outside electricity. There is a small flashing green light on the gas valve assembly that indicates that the pilot is burning. I've had no issues with this water heater since installation.

Yes, there are no power connections required. Unit has an green blinking LED that tells you it is working. The LED gets its power from the thermocouple.

Has anyone had a bad experience with this product? If yes, can you elaborate? The listing in Amazon gives it a one star rating (one out of five stars) and most of the comments are horrible in terms of quality and workmanship or the product.

I have one of these set up for propane. So far it's been the worst water heater I've ever had. Had it for about 6 months and the pilot started to go out every day. Had the installer send a tech out and he changed something that changed the outage from every day to about once a week. Fortunately, there is an led light that shows when the pilot is out so I check every day to make sure we don't get cold showers. Im trying new plumber now who thinks it may be a thermocouple problem. Stay away from this heater unless you enjoy tinkering.

Not sure why it got such a poor rating. I installed this about two years ago. It runs flawlessly and I never run out of hot water. In general I find that most appliances of this type generally look poor in appearance but works the way it should. I would give this water heater at least 4 starts and Pexsupply 5 stars. Water heater came quickly and in good shape.

So far we have had no issues with the hot water tank and it's been in place
over 2-years. I wanted a tank that was efficient with a high recovery rate
and that's what we got. Our gas bill went down significantly and we have
lots of hot water whenever we need it. Even if you shut it down it takes
less than an hour before you have a full tank of hot water again. I did
some research and this brand is supposed to be one of if not the best. Try
to buy this same unit from a local shop and they will charge you double.
