Description for Fantech VH704

A Heat Recovery Ventilator is a complete whole house ventilation system that incorporates a supply motor and an exhaust motor in one unit. It is designed to bring a continuous supply of fresh air into the home while exhausting an equal amount of contaminated air. HRVs use what is known as a "sensible" heat recovery core. The special aluminum core transfers heat from the exhaust air stream to the incoming air stream. Fresh incoming air is tempered by the heat that is transferred from the outgoing air so you save on energy costs. HRVs are designed for colder areas of the country that have longer heating seasons as well as drier desert areas of the South.

Comments about VH Series Heat Recovery Ventilator w/ Fan Shutdown Defrost, 4" Top Ports (up to 1,400 Sq. Ft.):

Have not operated this HRV yet as I only just received it. First impression is it is a solid and well constructed box and the core appears to be well made. The fans are quiet and will hopefully do the job as I was careful to keep ducts large and runs as short as possible. The filters are pretty lame - very thin and fit very loosely in their slots - there will be a good deal of bypass. The mounting bracket is very flimsy too but seems capable of holding the unit - barely. Overall this seems like a good product where it counts with a few corners cut on ancillary stuff to hit the price point.
PexSupply now Supply House service is fantastic as always. I'm always amazed at how quickly they fire out the orders!!

I bought this because of contaminated air issues from new carpet, vinyl flooring and adhesives used for them in my apartment. Openeing the windows during the day provided sufficient ventilation, but nighttime was too cold for this strategy. With the air/heat exchanger, I can easily keep the air quality at night maintained without throwing money out the window from heating costs. As there is not existing ventilation system or forced air heat in the apartment, I did have to make a wood panel to fit in a window in order to attach the intake/outtake ducts to the outdoor air source...not pretty, but pretty easy. Then ran a flexible dryer duct from the unit into the bedroom, just let it lay there on the floor, and fresh air gets pumped into the room at night...contaminated air pulled out through the opposite end of the apaprtment in the living room where the unit is. Morning time, air exchanger is switched off and the flixible duct is rolled up out of the way next to the unit. Again, not pretty, not a high end instalation, but the fresh air while sleeping at night is worth the peculiar install. I can breathe, no asthma from off-gassing...a great product. My method of installation may void the warranty though, oh well.

VH704 perfect size for our home!

Wall mount was really easy and extrememly helpful allowing fast on / off of unit for initial fitup. Top mount fittings were perfect for install. Fans are super quiet!
DON'T order 4" short 90's unless you plan to go into a wall using flex duct - one side is oval shaped (found out the hard way as picture doesn't show this).
DON'T try pulling 4" insulated flex duct over 4" PVC - separates inside plastic covering and hangs up on elbows. I pulled out center flex duct and ended up cutting insulation into 4' lengths and taping... use 5" IF you can find it.
Your install time may be MUCH faster but mine was a total of about 20 hours (strong maintenance skills but NOT a carpenter). I ran into numerous "challanges" due to 2x4's hidden in walls that I couldn't "see" until I opened up w/ hole saw. I chose to use PVC vs. flex duct to minimize static pressure / air flow loss and it was a good choice (but as mentioned took MUCH more time). By my calcs unit will turn air in home a minimum of 6X/day which should reduce Radon levels dramatically in our 1400 sq.ft. home - 1/4 partial basement 3/4 open crawl space. Will re-sample in 1 week and verify. I chose to leave entering 'stale' air inlet open to the basement as this is where the 'problem' stems from. I also used a 1/4" fiber filter media on both the inlet fresh and stale air to help protect core - metal filters provided are VERY basic and loose fitting. Have had unit running for a few days now and home is already much 'fresher' smelling! Thank you FanTech for an excellent product!

I am remodeling a small, 900sq ft cabin. The perimeter and roof have been spray foam insulated. A small HRV is warranted and this unit fits nicely into a small space. It is just what I was looking for to solve my ventilation probem.
