I have been looking for this device for several years. Luckily, someone on an HVAC forum pointed me to PEX Supply and the Oil Vent Dampers. I had already done several things to improve efficiency, including upgrading my 40+ year old burner to a modern flame retention burner, installing a smaller nozzle, using a pressure shutoff valve on the nozzle, installing a heat manager, insulating all the heating pipes and insulating walls and roof much better during a renovation.I finally bought and installed two OVDs this fall. One for my domestic hot water heater, the other for my furnace, both of which are oil-fired.The difference was immediately felt in several areas: Our convectors upstairs used to liberate all their heat in about 30 minutes as the boiler would throw out much of its heat up the chimney within the hour after shutdown. With the OVD, the radiator stay warm up to 3 hours now. The house continues to heat up past the thermostat set temperature and will stay warm all night long now, for up to 12 hours without refiring the furnace. The basement, which used to be chilly, is now warm. I never realized how much heat we were losing through the barometric dampers before. With the OVDs installed, the basement stays warm and the heat exchanger/fan I have installed on the furnace flue can really heat the cellar now, long after the furnace shuts off.I expect that we will save a significant amount of oil this winter as a result of this marvelous damper technology.Installation was easy. My only minor issue was that the length of cable and the angle of the connector for the blocked safety vent switch could have been longer and adjustable to make a straight run instead of a bend in the BX cable. But no problem, really. The assembly itself is really well built, quality materials and works quickly and transparently. 3 seconds, it opens then the furnace fires up. After shutdown, about 3 minutes pass, and it closes, which takes 3-4 seconds. It's nearly silent, too.I can't imagine why this isn't installed on EVERY oil furnace, given the price of heating oil today. This is a must-have item for every oil heat system.

My original review below (12/25/2010) was from when I had just purchased and installed this item. Like the other reviewers here, I gave this product a 5-star rating. However, after having it installed for 4 years, I feel the need to post an updated review. The damper works as described, and *would* be an efficient money-saving device. However, this product has consistently broken down once every 12 months. Thankfully it has a 5 year warranty, so I'll get one more year out of it in hopes of making my money back in oil savings. I am now on my 3rd brand new product. If you are having issues with your oil burner going out on reset, but it works fine once you press the reset button, try turning on the OVD's bypass switch and see if that solves your problems. This is what happens to mine every winter.

Comments about 7" Oil Vent Damper:
Easy installation, only I nad problems with electric connections. Damper has to have own power supply. I connected to L1 and L2 on aquastat and all the problems disapeared. Damper opens and closes without problems. Flue before damper is warm and above cold. Winter will proof how this device is good.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Money Saving Device!

So far working great - it is encouraging to see the draft damper stay closed when the furnace is off and the wind is blowing outside. I hate to see all that heat & money get sucked up the chimney.

Installed this myself, a pretty handy DIYer with an Engineering Degree. Simple enough, but pay close attention to the instructions and if you have ANY doubt, get your oil burner guy to do it. Need to be able to cut the flue pipe, cut a simple 3/4" hole and do the wiring. The wiring is totally dependent on your system, again, if you have ANY doubt, get your oil burner guy to do it. Basement seems a little warmer and overall it seems to operate exactly as it should, we'll have to see what the savings come to.
Excellent Product. Buy it!

OVD installed in furnace flue
Alternate view of OVD, installed.

Wow, what a difference in oil burning ! I had measured my oil level in the oil tank weekly last spring when it was running down to the bottom on the tank and figured the fraction of an inch used per day - it came out as .1393". I used the measure I had at the girdle part of the tank which is the parrallel sides (not the curved top or bottom). Now, when measuring the use of oil I am still in the girdle part and it is running at .0850 to .0920". So I am saving 34% to 39% of my oil in the boiler which I use only for the domestic hot water. This boiler is a KERR from 1985 flame retention with a 100 PSI pump and a 1 GPM nozzle. The only problem/reccomendation I have is in the installation. I have found that if it is installed so that the motor is in the 7 o'clock position the baffle inside the flue will migrate down and eventually jam the works and when the furnace calls for heat it will not move. I have re-positioned the unit so that the motor is at the 3 o'clock position and the baffle is level horizontally. This is the first unit that I had ordered last Spring. I did order 2 more for my children for their homes - a 7" and a 6".I did have my first unit back in the 1970's from another company and it was a mechanical model that was not sophisticated as this electronic one and the baffle did not stop the whole flue. It had a 1/4" space between the flue and baffle. It did work - but not as well as this new model.I had to fight with the local oil dealers to be able to find out that these are available out there - and they work. I did install it myself, I did install a CO2 sensor and smoke detector, I did check the draft, I did put 3 screws at each joint. Safety ! I highly reccommend it be installed by a professional oil burner person, for safety's sake ! You DO NOT WANT carbon monoxide in your house!!!

Easy to install and operate, the unit does as it was designed. Easiest Flue Vent Damper I ever installed. The directions were flawless, leaving nothing to chance. Quiet operation and the barometric damper below the unit no longer bangs under any wind conditions. It completely seals the boiler from energy-robbing drafts that would cool and waste the potential energy-heating of your home. Now no more cold outside air is being drawn into the basement with fumes when using the clothes dryer.
