Description for Field Controls SWG-6s

Gas and oil heating appliances generate heat through the combustion of fuel. The heat is transferred through the heat exchanger and distributed to the conditioned space. The products of combustion, however, must be vented safely out of the structure. In a conventional chimney, venting is achieved by the natural lifting action of the hot combustion gas. New, efficient systems absorb more of the heat in the heat exchanger and produce lower temperature vent gas. Lower temperature gas does not rise as quickly or as reliably as in older, less efficient systems. Power venting or sidewall venting is more economical and safer than chimney venting. A power venter uses a motorized blower to vent the products of combustion. A power venter is interlocked with the appliance to ensure that proper draft is achieved before the appliance burner is activated.

Features

  • Patented SWG or ComboVent Power Venters are ETL and cETL listed for all LP gas, natural gas, or oil-fired heating equipment. The SWG or ComboVent combines the motor, blower, and vent hood in one complete, easy to install unit. The SWG mounts on the outside of the building and pulls the combustion gases from the appliance through the outside wall utilizing 100% negative pressure. Benefits of the SWG or ComboVent Power Venter include:
  • 100% negative pressure in the vent pipe for maximum safety.
  • Standard galvanized pipe can be used instead of expensive stainless steel.
  • No need to seal vent pipe joints, saving time and money.
  • Significantly longer vent lengths than positive pressure, direct vent systems.
  • The SWG or ComboVent is recommended by major heating appliance manufacturers.
  • The SWG or ComboVent must be sized to match the appliance or appliances' input firing rate. Most firing rates are published in the manufacturer's installation manual. The SWG and ComboVent must be installed with a CK Control Kit to ensure proper listing and safe, efficient venting.

My old power venter needed replacement it was rusted out and not pulling out the fumes. This unit really has the power to exhaust and I saved a lot of money on the install myself. Here is what you need to know if you are replacing an older model. First off, you will most likely have to enlarge the hole through the exterior wall as the outside tube diameter is larger in this unit. Also be prepared to adjust or replace the tubing inside that connects to this unit as the tubing on this unit is shorter. I had to do both of these things. Not that big of a deal but added some time to the job. Also take care to measure your tube diameter. The previous install used a reducer to make the 6" tube coming off the heater neck down to 4" to the power venter but they encased this reduction inside of a 6" tube. Wacky. So I cut all that off and made the tube 6" the whole way from the power venter to the heater. The larger the opening the better the air flow. I hear it running now and everything is working perfect.

This vent works well with oil furnaces, etc., and I always recommend the SS model. Galvanized units seem to "rust out" quicker.

I bought this to replace a similar model that was galvanized...not stainless. the galvanized lasted about 15 years before the housing started to rust through. I patched it and ran it a few more. If the galvy lasted that long, I figure the stainless will last as long as I'm in the house. The mounting flange is larger than the original so I had to cut back my siding, but other than that it was a perfect fit. They include the ferrel (sp?) and the compression nut to couple the sensor tube to the Field controls. All you will need to get is some high temp silicone and screws to mount the flanges. (obviously if you purchase this for new construction...you will need the proper reducer and piping to couple the 4" stainless pipe to your appliance.)

This is a replacement for a 9 year old Field Controls Power Vent of the same capacity that was not made of Stainless. The original model had not functionally failed, but was corroding badly. It was almost a direct replacement with the exception of the length of the base plate (1/2 inch longer). This model looks to be of much better quality, but time will tell. Decent price and timely delivery from PEX Supply.

Replaced the standard Field Controls SWG power venter with this stainless version. It is so quiet we no longer hear the boiler kick on. No more rusted out vent or vibrating pipes. Worth the money as most oil service companies will mark up the cost to over $500.00 not including labor!
