Description for Fieldpiece HS35

Overview:
The HS35 Expandable Manual and Auto Ranging Stick Meter includes the tests you use everyday for HVAC/R field service. Like the rest of the HS30 series, the HS35 works with all of our accessory heads. It comes equipped with a magnetic hanger, detachable silicone test leads and alligator clip probe tips for remote and easy one-handed testing, as well as the full set of built-in safety features. This auto-ranging stick meter also includes a bar graph on the LCD for an analog feel. Technicians say built-in temperature with excellent compensation and capacitance ranges are a big plus. Technicians also like having the choice between manual ranging and auto ranging when hooking up to test points with the push of a button.

The HS35 is an auto or manual ranging DMM and works with all Fieldpiece accessory heads enabling the user to test a wider variety of parameters from a single meter. Plus the removable tip test leads and alligator probe extensions make safe one-handed testing a snap. The k-type thermocouple port on the front of the meter allows you to test a number of HVAC parameters right there from your multimeter. As with all electrical testing, please read the Operator's Manual and associated safety practices thoroughly before testing and adhere to industry best practices for safety when testing any current carrying device.

Auto Ranging Mode
The HS35 is an auto ranging meter and is very accurate. For this reason, when you switch to a position on the meter that auto ranges, you're likely to see movement on the display. For example, when the dial is turned to VAC the meter will drop to the millivolts range and you'll see an "m" on the bottom of the LCD signifying a millivolt reading. The meter is picking up very low transient voltages in the air. Close the circuit by touching the leads together away from a voltage source. You'll see the meter zero or a very small, stable millivolt reading.

Manual Ranging Mode
Use it as a manual ranging meter by pressing the RNG button for approximately one second. You'll see RANGE appear in the upper left corner of the LCD (display). The decimal point will move, indicating which range you are on, each time you press RNG in this mode. If you have the wrong voltage selected you will get an "OL" (Out of Range) on your display. To switch back to auto ranging press and hold the RNG button for approximately one second until "RANGE" disappears from the top left of the LCD. This eliminates the transient voltages in the air that you see in auto ranging mode unless you are in the mV range and disconnected from a voltage source.

Selecting Ranges
For DC voltage, set the meter to the VDC parameter instead of VAC. For all ranges choose a range just above the value you expect. If display reads "OL" (overload), select a higher range. If display shows less than three numbers, select a lower range for better resolution.

Non-Contact Voltage
With the red NCV tab on the tip of the meter close to an AC voltage, press and hold the NCV button. The NCV LED will light and the beeper will beep. The closer you get to AC voltage, the louder the beep. The NCV function is sensitive enough to detect 24VAC on thermostats.

Capacitance
For motor-start and motor-run capacitors. Disconnect the capacitor from power first. Short the terminals to discharge the capacitors. Disconnect any resistors that might be between the terminals of the capacitor.

Microamps
For measuring the flame diode current in a heater control.

High Voltage and Continuity Indicators
In any VAC/VDC range, when you touch a voltage greater than 30V, the beeper will beep and the red Hi-V LED will signal you. Be careful! The continuity beeper and green LED tell you if the circuit you're testing is open or closed (using the switch position to the right of OFF).

MIN/MAX
Press MIN/MAX once to begin recording MIN and MAX. Press MIN/MAX to select current reading's MIN or MAX. Hold down for 2 seconds to exit MIN/MAX function.

Temperature
Plug any K-type thermocouple directly into the meter to measure temperature. Temperature measurement will be accurate even in fast changing environments because of excellent temperature compensation. One thermocouple is included. No adapter is required.

Silicone Leads with Detachable Probe Tips
Because the wire insulation is silicone the leads will stay flexible in cold weather and will not melt if bumped by a soldering iron. When testing electrical circuits with two hands, there is a risk that a careless mistake may complete a circuit through your body and potentially cause death or injury. Detachable probes tips and the modular design of the HS36 allow you to plug V lead tip into the top of the meter, connect an alligator lead tip to COM and ground, and perform a one-hand test more easily than most any meter on the market.

Field °F calibration
For accuracies of ±1°F, calibrate to a known temperature. A glass of stabilized ice water is very close to 32°F (0°C) and is usually very convenient but any known temperature can be used.
