Description for Goodman GMVC951155DX

The Goodman GMVC9/GCVC9 multi-position condensing gas furnace with two-stage heating and variable-speed circulating blower reduces operating costs and advances home comfort by eliminating temperature swings and stratification from floor-to-ceiling and room-to-room. The Goodman GMVC9/GCVC9 variable-capacity furnace smoothly ramps up or down based on the demands of the home to keep temperature consistent at all times. The Goodman GMVC9/GCVC9 multi-position, variable-speed gas furnace features a patented aluminized steel tubular heat exchanger and energy-efficient hot surface ignition system. These furnaces are run-tested for heating or combination heating/cooling applications. With a corrosion-resistant, painted steel cabinet, these heaters can be installed in a utility room, closet, alcove, basement or attic. (Not intended for use in mobile homes).

Comments about Goodman 115,000 BTU 95% Efficiency, Two Stage Burner, Variable Speed Blower, Upflow/Horizontal Application Gas Furnace:

I bought this furnace to replace an older one that was nearing the end of its useful life. I wanted a higher efficiency furnace, but didn't want to spend a lot. Quotes from local HVAC contractors to replace the furnace were unacceptably high, so I decided to do the job myself. Unfortunately, few furnace and A/C manufacturers sell their products directly to the consumer. Goodman is one exception although they void the warranty on furnaces purchased over the internet. Not good.

Having done business with Pex Supply in the past, I called about the Goodman warranty issue and was told that warranty claims would be handled by Pex Supply as an authorized reseller. With that assurance, I purchased the Goodman furnace and received it via a freight trucking company in about two weeks.

The furnace was delivered on a pallet, but was not well protected. It was strapped to the pallet and wrapped in clear plastic. It did not appear to be damaged so I accepted delivery, but later found a small dent in one of the panels. I was able to fix the dent myself, so I made no attempt to raise the issue with Pex Supply or the freight company.

Installing the furnace was not as simple as I first thought. The original furnace had a 2" PVC exhaust vent, where as this Goodman furnace requires a 3" vent. I had to run a new vent pipe to the side of the house. I also wanted to include an intake vent although the furnace is certified for non-direct venting, as well. The re-venting was the most time consuming part of the job.

The other challenge was adapting the new furnace to the existing supply air plenum. The Goodman furnace was smaller and proportioned differently than the original furnace so I had to have a local sheet metal shop fabricate a plenum extention to join the Goodman to the existing plenum. Removing the old furnace and connecting in the new Goodman took a full day. The gas piping, electrical conduit, and condensate piping all had to be redone. It was clear why bids to have the work done were as high as they were. Don't attempt this yourself if you are not a professional or seasoned DIYer.

The furnace has been in operation now for a month and is working flawlessly. I was very pleased to note how quiet it is compared to the old furnace, especially with the direct venting. The 2-stage burner and variable speed blower also make the furnace operation less noticeable throughout the house. Investing in a 2-stage thermostat would make it even more so, I think.

The quality of the furnace is good, but, I suspect, not as good as some other brands. I had a couple of minor issues with the sheet metal cabinet that proved in the end to be inconsequential. In general, the cabinet is sturdy and the exterior gray finish is attractive. I like the plastic peep hole windows that allow me to view the burner and the LED status display on the electronic controller board without having to remove the front panels.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this furnace, the installation instructions that came with it, its quiet and efficient operation, and the ease of installation aside from my unique re-venting and retrofit requirements.

I give the product 5 stars, but only because Pex Supply is an authorized reseller through whom the warranty is honored.
