Comments about 508, 1/8" Straight Steam Convector Air Valve:

Due to space restraints, I used to use the Hoffman 100 air valve on my steam radiator. This Hoffman 508 replaces the discontinued model 100. It functions reliably and is easy to use and adjust.

Yes. It's not obvious from the general description of the product but if you look up some of the specifications and read the installation instructions, it's perfectly acceptable for bleeding air from hot water based hydronic systems. And American made and repairable!

                  Hi,
I had not seen this kind of air valves before I bought it either and since its description was saying it is for a steam convectors I decided to try it for my steam cast iron ceiling radiator. Since the valve was small and I did not have enough space to install normal steam air valve it worked fine for my purpose.
As much as I could find out about it (from the Hoffman's link below)
                  http://completewatersystems.com/product/convector-steam-vents/
this valve is a Disc-type vent as opposed to float type vent(the way most of the steam vents are). In other words it uses different thermodynamics principle to open and close thus letting the air from the steam radiators/convectors out so the steam can get in it and heat.
That being said it seems it is designed to work with steam systems which work at a higher temperature than the hot water systems. It is probably tuned to close when that high temperature steam gets to it, but it might not work well with hot water as its lower temperature might not close it properly and might leak water out.
That is the best opinion I can offer.

yes, it is used for hydronic systems to bleed air out of the system. Also used on steam systems.
Check and set cap position for each respective system.
