Description for Honeywell 50027998-002

Water sensor kit 50027998-002 for all TrueSteam models. Replaces part number 50027998-001. Includes the sensor, wire harness, 2 gaskets, retaining clip and screw. As shown in photo.

This sensor has five 1/4" terminals that connect with the harness's modular connector. The terminals are non-magnetic stainless steel bars that protrude out the bottom of the assembly at different levels.

This is a simple device with no internal electronics. Continuity should exist between the terminal connection and where the stainless steel protrudes from the bottom. Continuity should not exist between the different terminals (when dry).

TrueSTEAM Water Level Sensor: works fine

The original equipment sensor (part no. 50027998-001 in a Honeywell TrueSTEAM Direct-Injection Humidifier HM509A) failed after 3 years, due to cracks in the plastic coating around the metal probes. The troubleshooting procedure in the manual correctly identified the problem (2 blinks of red light = failed water sensor). After ordering the part, while waiting for it to arrive, I coated the cracks in the original sensor with superglue, which worked for a couple of days before it failed again.

This replacement part was the correct item as advertised, and I receive it within the stated delivery time. Installation was simple, with instructions provided in the box in case the original manual is not available.

In addition to the sensor and gaskets, a wiring connector and 2 wire clips were provided. I used the new gaskets, although the original ones were still pliable. I did not need the new wiring connector and I think it's unlikely this would fail within the service life of the humidifier. Only 1 wire clip is used, so even in the unlikely event that the original clip was damaged, including a 2nd clip is unnecessary.

I installed the new sensor about 3 weeks ago and it is working properly. No way to know what its life span will be.

Shipping and brokerage fees to Canada added about $40 to the price of this Honeywell steam humidifier water level sensor. To replace it under warranty (part only), the local HVAC serviceman required ten times that amount and two service calls for which I would have had to hang around for a half day each. I would have had to wait 3 days because the part wasn't in stock at the HVAC depot. If I picked it up myself I would have had to pay for it (no warranty so at a much higher price than I paid from Pex), take a half day of my time and put 80 km/50 miles on the car.

I ordered it online from Pex and the sensor (Honeywell original part) was delivered by UPS to my door in 7 days. It took me 5 minutes to install. Think I'm going to use my local HVAC dealer again? Not likely.

We have extremely hard water and during the winter the steam humidifier requires monthly service with a complete cleaning each time. It does a superb job of humidifying and I'm happy with it even though it requires regular frequent and intensive maintenance.

I would recommend a steam humidifier to a friend but with the reservation that the humidifier isn't install-and-forget.

Comments about TrueSTEAM Water Level Sensor Assembly:

The sensor is made by Honeywell for use in trueSteam humidifier and is known to be quite fragile. The replacement part fit perfectly and restored function of the humidifier. It was a very great pleasure dealing with Supply House. The web site made it easy to find the right part, pricing was way below any other quote, and delivery was very fast. Based on this experience, I ordered a filter for the system and received the same great service. Thanks Suppy House.

After four years, my Honeywell TruSteam began to act erratically and issue error codes (blinking lights). I found a Honeywell manual on-line and after some troubleshooting, it appeared that the water level sensor was the culprit. I did an online search and SupplyHouse.com had the best price, so I placed an order. Delivery was prompt. The installation was easy using the instructions packed with the part. Warning for the toolbox-impaired: some fasteners call for Torx screwdrivers. I had a couple that were not exact, but worked. This is an OEM part, not aftermarket. The unit has operated flawlessly for three weeks since the part was installed. I hope that it will last for longer than four years.

After 5 years of use, my Honeywell HM512 Truestream humidifier failed with a 6-blink error. The manual suggested replacement of the Water Level Sensor or the Solenoid. I confirmed with an ohmmeter, that the longest tips of the sensor each indicated an open resistance, apparently due to the buildup of mineral deposits. There were some hairline cracks in the plastic assembly as well. I ended up using a Dremel tool to remove the deposits, and each one then showed a short from end-to-end as expected. Despite this, the unit continued to fail as before.

I installed the replacement unit, and the 6-blink problem was resolved. I can't explain the failure mechanism in the old unit, but it works. I also noted that the seals on the older unit were stiff and compressed, compared to the ones shipped with the new assembly, and the spring pressure to secure the new assembly was much greater than on the old one, so that should help to prevent any future steam leakage from the tank into the control area as well.

My Honeywell whole house humidifier works great when it's working. This water sensor assembly failed the 3rd year of ownership, so it hasn't worked for a few years. I tried again this year and the contractor wanted too much money to come out plus the cost of parts. When I read the reviews, they seemed so easy, so I went on line and bought the kit. It was very easy to install; instructions were great. The humidifier works like a charm now!! However, at the end of the heating season you have to be careful not to damage the sensor probes (or any of the parts) when cleaning them. Thanks for the reviews!!

After cleaning it, it still gave me the same fault, though I couldn't believe replacimg it would fix it. I ordered it and Now I'm a believer. After replacing it with the new parts it has been running just great.
