We live in the Mid-Atlantic region, and we love the heat supplied by our 20 year old Slant Fin boiler. The system's only weakness is the Honeywell Aquastat relay. This is the second Aquastat that has failed in the 8 years we've owned the house. Our HVAC repairman informed us that these relays have a short life expectancy and our experience with the product is fairly typical. The relay worked well, up to the point of its early demise. Because of that, and because options for replacement are limited, we purchased the Aquastat again. PexSupply.com sent us the part quickly and their price was very good. Outstanding service from Pex Supply.

I have had my boiler for 35 years and I am on my fourth Honeywell Aquastat. The first unit lasted for 25 years, but the last three only lasted for 2-3 heating seasons before the relay went out. The relay is a cheap piece of junk that would only cost about $3.00 if it were replaceable, but it is built in.

    Q:

I just replaced an old L8148E Aquastat with a L8148E 1265. I kept my upper limit on the older unit at 150. The new unit's lowest upper limit is 180 (maybe a little lower). I have baseboard in the basement and cast iron radiators on the main floor. Is the 180 temperature OK for both types of radiator or should I replace the 1265 with the 1299? Everything seems to be working OK and the boiler shuts off at 175 or so. Thanks!

    Q:

I have a old Buderus boiler hot water , It has been starting to have issues with pressure side so I put on a new Prv and a new expansion tank but I am still having issues so what i do is fill boiler to 12 psi and then shut off water supply I will end up over pressure and then the relife blows and then im down to zero . Could the aqaustat be the reason and if so I have a Type L8148E combined circulator load I need to know if this model will work in replacement and also if you think this may help my problem Thanks

      hello
did you check the pressure in expansion tank with a pressure gauge?
should be 12psi cold and 0 psi in boiler, then fill boiler to 12psi
what temp is the aquastat set at and is the boiler going higher than set temp
      should be set @ 180F
sometimes you have to bleed a little pressure off from a cold start
if all correct, boiler shouldn't go over 30psi and blow relief

Aquastat is not your problem with respect to pressure. Sounds like your expansion tank is probably waterlogged. What kind of pressure reducing valve did you put in?

I have a Honeywell L8148E-1000 from an older Dunkirk boiler. Is the L8148E-1265 the correct replacement for this discontinued aquastat?
    Asked on 11/18/2013 by Dave

    2 answers

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

The 1265 control is most often used for pex tubing where the temp high end
setting should not exceed 180 degrees which is a safe setting for a hot
water system. A higher setting would melt the pipe if metal pipe is used a
different control with a higher temp range can be used.

but dont know what model of boiler you have, so cant say for sure if its a good choice

according to the wiring diagram for boiler with intermittent ignition the original control was a L8148E 1257
that part # changes to a L8148E 1265 which has the plug for the damper motor

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

The L8148E1257 is the listed unit for this boiler. The 1265 will work for you. Set the high limit at the lowest setting - 180 degrees.

Answered on 11/11/2013 by Nick Name from Western U.S.
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

1265 if pex tubing used, reason the temp range of 1299 starts at 180 add
diff of 15 degrees and you will likely melt pex tubing.

      Message:
I have to order a Honeywell L8148E auqastat relay. I noticed you have 2 models, the L8148E1265 and the L8148E1299. What is the difference? Sincerely, Anno J. Cazemier.
And below the answer I got.
      Hello,
The unit ending in 1265 has a 40 VA transformer where the unit ending in 1299 has a 50 VA transformer. Other then the voltage rating they are the same. If there is any other way we can help or if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reply to this email. Have a great day.
I do not know what is different to the unit ending in 1190

      hello
you don't have to drain the boiler, the bulb on the end of the capillary tube inserts into the well on the boiler
the old control may have set screws or clamp to disconnect from the well
also use the heat conductive grease that comes with it

Not normally, unless in addition to the aquastat you also needed to change the hollow well on the boiler casting into which the capillary temperature sensor on the back of the aquastat inserts.
