Description for K-Flex 6RXL048218

Overview:

Insul-Lock® insulation products and accessories are widely recognized by the HVACR and Plumbing wholesale trade. They offer superior product characteristics such as cold weather flexibility, durable skin surface and exacting manufacturing tolerances.

Insul-Lock® Seam-Seal pipe insulation is an environmentally friendly, CFC-free, flexible elastomeric insulation, pre-slit with a factory-applied pressure sensitive adhesive. It is black in color and identified as Insul-Lock® Seam-Seal. This superior closed cell insulation is designed to retard heat flow and prevent condensation when properly installed. Insul-Lock® Seam-Seal pipe insulation is pre-slit with a factory applied specially formulated bonding adhesive applied to both seam surfaces and comes with convenient built-in release liners which allow for easy installation. Insul-Lock® Seam-Seal has the same excellent insulation properties as standard Insul-Tube® and is used on similar applications such as refrigerant lines, cold water plumbing, roof drains and chilled water systems. Insul-Lock® Seam- Seal can be used with heat tracing/heat tapes.

Insul-Lock uses the pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) seam-seal system. The PSA system enables the user to fit the tube over the pipe, peel back the release liner and apply pressure to close (starting at the ends and working your way to the center) to install your insulation in seconds! This system guarantees a strong, durable seal without the risk of messy adhesives that could spill.

Insul-Lock® Seam-Seal is non-porous, non-fibrous and resists mold growth. An EPA registered antimicrobial agent is incorporated into the product providing additional protection against mold, fungal and bacterial growth.

K-Flex USA elastomeric insulation products are GREENGUARD® certified as low VOC materials, meeting the requirements of the Children and Schools classification, the most stringent requirements. Additionally, all K-Flex USA elastomeric insulation products are GREENGUARD® listed for mold resistance and meet the "mold resistant" criteria.

I am an amateur and used the product to insulate my basement pipes for my hot water heating system (to prevent unnecessary heat loss to the basement.) (Max water temp is 180F) This product came with a tape adhesive that went the length of the pipe insulation. After a few days the adhesive loosened and I used duct tape to reinforce.

I am also unsure (with this and insulation for a smaller pipe) if I measured/ordered correctly for the size of pipe. How snugly should the insulation fit?

The product was easy to use and seems to do the job. I don't like to use fiberglass wrap and this was much easier. The pipe wrap could be cut to size and used on elbows to some extent. (Because I was not using the insulation to protect from freezing, it was not necessary to get every spot of pipe covered.)

Perhaps this was overkill for hot water heating pipes, but hardware stores do not carry insulation sleeves for larger pipes. Not sure if I will recover my costs with heat saved. (Basement was always the warmest room in the house!) Not sure if I will insulate the incoming pipes (cooler) as well as the outgoing lines.

Seems to be a quality product.

I was very disappointed when I received my shipment of pipe insulation from Supply House.com. Because I didn't order a full box quantity the insulation came packaged in a large square box. This caused the adhesive to transfer strips to loose their protective covering and the adhesive migrated onto the mashed pieces of insulation that were in the box. This box contained both 7/8 and 1 1/8 in. insulation and the pieces were much more difficult to use after they had become misshaped by the shipping process. 1 1/8 in. insulation that was shipped in the correct size container showed none of these problems

Solar water heating

Comments about 7/8" Pipe (O.D.) x 1/2" Wall Insul-Lock Pipe Insulation, 6':

Use to insulate glycol transfer fluid for in-floor heating system. Previous insulation did not last long in the sun and was not closed-cell. You need to be careful when installing this insulation because it tears easily. Also, the pre-slit covering does not stay in place during insulation, causing problems with sealing.
Recommend covering with aluminum tape to protect against sun.

Squeeze out a little more insulation value

Why would any residentail heating contractor be interested in 1 5/8" ID insulation? I use this insulation to insulate pipe unions, ball valves and other hard to insulate plumbing. Typically, most of the piping can be insulated with standard pipe insulation. Augmenting that insulation with insaulation that can warp over the typical insulation allows you to finsih the job.

This worked great to cover the pipe that goes from the exterior air conditioning unit to the house. Just had to measure the pipe and purchase this product. It wraps around the pipe and the ends are super sticky. Awesome awesome product. Highly recommended.

The insulation on my condenser lines were in horrible shape- gapped and deteriorated from sun exposure. I replaced the insulation with this product. It went on easily and covered the lines perfectly. The price is fair and the products arrived on schedule.

Installation Is A Snap

Comments about 5/8" Pipe (O.D.) x 1/2" Wall Insul-Lock Pipe Insulation, 6':

Wear the gloves! They make this 'no fuss - no mess' Simply press the pipe into the insulation, carefully peel back a few inches on both sides starting at one end keeping them apart then align the ends, press together and as you peel both sides at once, press together as you move to the other end. The glue sticks very well. If you do it well, you can slide the insulation into place after installed around the pipe as in an unreachable spot or up a wall cavity. The only drawback we found was a few ends were a little difficult to start the peeling, not a big deal. Just have patience with it. We ran our first 360 feet in about 2-1/2 hours in an open attic with a home run system.

  • 7/8" Pipe (O.D.) x 1/2" Wall Insul-Lock Pipe Insulation, 6'

    Q:

What size insul-lock pipe insulation is recommended for 5/8" pipe with 3/4" O.D.? I don't see one list to fit this size pipe. Thank you
Asked on 5/22/2016 by John from St. Paul, MN

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The closest option would most likely be the piping listed for 1" applications.

  • 4-1/8" Pipe (O.D.) x 1/2" Wall Insul-Lock Pipe Insulation, 6'

    Q:

What is the inside diameter of the cavity?

What size pipe insulation do you recommend to insulate a 2 inch outside diameter pipe?
    Asked on 2/8/2016 by Joe

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The inside diameter is 4 1/8" on the inside of the insulation tube.

If the 2" outside diameter is copper use sku 6RXL048218. If it is iron pipe size or PVC use sku 6RXL048238.

    Q:

I have a 10 foot pipe that is 3 inches in diameter. Will this insulation work?
Asked on 1/21/2016 by Taylor from United States

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Yes, this would be compatible with 3" diameter piping. It is a 6ft long piece so two pieces would be needed for 10 ft. long run.

    Q:

Will this insulation work on HVAC line set
    Asked on 12/30/2015 by Mark

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

This closed cell insulation is designed to retard heat flow and prevent condensation when properly installed. This product is recommended for applications ranging from -70°F to 200°F
(-57°C to 93°C) for both new and existing applications, so it would not be ideal for HVAC lines.

my experience was that the glue strip tended to de-laminate from the foam when I pulled it apart, although not entirely. you could maybe only reseal it once but I would have glue on hand - not sure which kind would be best for the application.
      good luck!

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

The glue is extremely sticky and there is no way to reuse it. In fact, you
have to make sure the piece is in place before you take off the plastic
backer. Otherwise the glue sticks to everything including the pipe. To
make sure the glue continues to stick, I would recommend some cable ties in
the areas that are likely to come apart, like 90 degree turns.
      good luck!

If the water in the line is not moving than eventually (a few days) the line
      will freeze. It
does not lower the freezing point of the line but only insulates it and the
      cold will eventually
penetrate the line if the liquid is not moving.
