Comments about 8-CIA, 4/10 HP, 45 GPM - Automatic Submersible Sump Pump, 10ft power cord:
We have a lot of ground water in our area, and our sump pump runs every day, all year round. After heavy rains, it sometimes has to run for hours non-stop. We had problems with several brands of pumps, and had to replace each of them after a year or two. Luckily, we tried this Little Giant pump. We've had two so far, and each has run at least 8 years. They keep up with the inflow, and give us peace of mind.

Q:How deep does the water have to be to turn on the pump on automatic? My back yard is prone to flooding and I was thinking about putting this pump in a five gallon bucket that has been set in at ground level.
A:I did in fact test mine in a HD 5gal bucket when I got it just to make sure it worked and it came on fine. That's the one and only time it has ever been used as I have this pump as a backup in my sump pit. However, my main pump is identical 8 series, only in bronze. It has been flawless in the last 12 years and comes on when the water level is about 7 inches over the top of the pump. No adjustments can be made to this pump which is automatic all the time working off a pressure switch. That means no worrying about debris clogging the switch though you do have to make sure stuff doesn't get sucked into the intake.
A:And the other thing to think about in a flood zone, is the electrical situation when the entire area is submerged in water. I would consult with your municipal electrical code official about that.
A:You can download the manual for this pump from the Little Giant website. You can also telephone them for technical assistance.
