Description for NOFP eBAR464

The Barrier product family is an EPS foam underslab insulation and vapor retarder, designed to insulate radiant heating projects from heat loss and retard moisture migration through concrete. The core of the product is made of flexible, recyclable expanded polystyrene that provides the excellent insulation characteristics that are needed to maximize energy savings and minimize heat loss. The unique core has vapor retarding films bonded to both sides as well as a patented self-taping edge and overlapping flange to make the entire installation seam-free. High-performance insulation values, cost-saving installation, and unequaled flexibility makes The Barrier product family the most effective radiant floor insulation and vapor retarder in todays market.

Features & Benefits:

  • Durable / Flexible / Walkable
  • 100% Waterproof and Vapor-proof
  • Expanded polystyrene for real insulating value
  • Fast / Easy Installation - 4' x 64' rolls for significant labor savings
  • Seamless - Patented factory applied tape edge reduces thermal bridging
  • Printed layout guides for tubing layout or trimming
  • Sustainable = Recycled EPS content
  • Improved 3" overlap flange
  • Full product coverage - no need to purchase additional material for overlap loss.

Note: This item comes standard with a self taped edge that runs down the 64' length of the product. TP2180WT - White Seam Tape is recommended for the 4' edge when seaming two rolls together at the ends.

Product Use:
Like a foam cup protects your hand from the hot beverage it holds, The Barrier product family protects concrete from heat loss and moisture damage, especially when used in a radiant heat floor application. Use in all floor heating or snow melting applications where the heat should be driven upwards as opposed to wasting the energy to the ground. Great uses are in hydronic, electric slab heating or snow melting applications. Where higher density material is desired, BarrierHL and XBoard at 25 psi provides the increased support and necessary R-values such as in slab-on-slab retrofits with thinner concrete over-pours. The entire product lineup is strong, durable, and utilizes long-lasting proven R-Value performance without the use of reflective foil. Installation is far easier because you can walk on all of them without breaking - plus, the patented seam taping system makes installation fast and efficient.

Great product and easy to install

Comments about BarrierX5 Underslab Insulation - 1.25? x 4? x 60? Roll:

Fast and easy to install. Does double duty by being an insulator and vapor barrier so saves time installing. Seems to be very flexable so you don't have to be perfectly fine graded. It conforms to slight differences in grade very well as opposed to rigid foam board that breakes if subgrade isn't perfect. A little more expenseive than foam board but worth it for ease of installing.

This is a wonderful product. I used in a new garage i am building with a radiant heat system. It a very easy to install mat. Comes with a flap with a tape joint so the sections can be secured to each other. The factury cut edges could have been cut straighter, I had to recut all to get a perfect fit

I used this product as a thermal barrier under metal mesh to which I twist tied pex-al-pex for radiant hydronic heating and then poured the pigment-tinted cement slab that forms my warm bathroom floor.

Can this product be used under the floor of a shop or warehouse? Will it effect the load-bearing properties of the slab?

I believe it would be fine and not weaken the slab, but the question would
be best posed to the manufacturer.

                  A:

I used this product in a residential application. I can warn you to insulate the entire slab; not just underneath, but on the sides as well. The product performs as promised but there is some temperature bleed into and out of the foundation concrete at the edges, which unfortunately was not isolated ( with product) from the slab before the pour.
An engineer can confirm that load-bearing would not be a factor. The product is perfect for thermal retention/isolation.

Why does the product R-value vary from 5 to 10.5?

                  A:

The R-value depends upon the manner in which the insulation is installed. If the sheets overlap and are taped together at the seams, R-Value will be higher. When there are gaps between sheets, R-Value decreases.

The material alone has an r value for the 1.25 inch thickness of 5 at 70 F. If you includl the rvalues of a made up assembly including the gravel sand and concrete, the manufacturer suggests that 10.3 is possible-- see brochure on documents tab.

Foamboard is used for this application, not staples.

Yes, the X5 will accept foam staples as both the film and the foam will hold the staples and tubing in place.
