PEX Tools are used to make connections with PEX Tubing and to attach the tubing to fittings, manifolds, faucets, fixtures, and many other products. There are several PEX Tools available and each has restrictions for which tubing, fittings, and rings must be used with it. There are many different PEX tool and fitting systems available today. To figure out which tool & fitting system is best for you, you can think about the following questions.
Are you an experienced DIY, or are you a beginner?
The easiest fitting system to work with is SharkBite, followed by the clamp system with the HydroPEX Cinch/Clamp Ratchet Tool. The expander, crimp, and press methods are better suited for experienced DIYs or professionals.
Do you want the biggest and best brand name, or is brand not an issue?
The Uponor Wirsbo Expansion system with ProPEX Expander Tool is the most recognized connection system amongst professionals. Uponor is the world leader in the production of PEX and its fitting system has been used for over 30 years. The Viega Press system is also gaining popularity among trade professionals and DIYs. There are crimp and clamp systems made by many different manufacturers and most of the products are comparable to each other.
How important is price to you?
Prices of PEX tools and fittings vary substantially. The Wirsbo Expander Tool and Viega Press Tools are more expensive, while the crimp and clamp tools are much less expensive. If you are price conscious, the crimp or clamp system will be the most inexpensive, and still provide a quality PEX connection. If quality is your main concern regardless of price, the Wirsbo or Viega systems are preferable.
The ProPEX Expander Tool works with Wirsbo ProPEX fittings and rings. The Viega Press Tools works with Viega Press Fittings and Viega Press Sleeves. The Watts Crimp Tool and other crimp tools work with crimp style fittings such as HydroPEX and copper crimp rings. The HydroPEX clamp tool and other clamp tools work with crimp style fittings such as HydroPEX and stainless steel clamps.
A PEX cutter is used to make a clean, even cut in PEX Tubing. This will ensure that a proper PEX connection is made. Other types of cutters may be used instead of a PEX cutter as long as they are able to make clean and even cuts in the tubing. However, because it is relatively inexpensive and guaranteed to do a good job, it is advisable to purchase a cutter designed specifically for PEX tubing.
PEX uncoilers are used to aid in the installation of PEX Tubing in radiant heat and large PEX plumbing jobs. If you will be working by yourself, or if you will be doing many jobs, a PEX uncoiler is definitely worth getting. In radiant heat jobs where coils of 1000' are used, an uncoiler will make the job easier, neater, and faster.

These tools require the use of Wirsbo ProPEX fittings and Wirsbo ProPEX Rings. The PEX Clamp Tool makes connections for PEX Tubing with the HydroPEX stainless steel clamps of different sizes. The HydroPEX Clamp Tool work with the stainless steel clamps. When used with the proper stainless steel clamps, The PEX Clamp Tool can make 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 1" PEX Tubing Connections.
The new CrimpAll tool by Watts Radiant crimps four sizes of PEX pipe. This versatile new tool crimps 3/8", 1/2 ", 5/8", and 3/4" PEX CrimpRing fittings. The complete PEX Tool kit includes the CrimpAll tool with four jaw set sizes, rugged tool case, adjustment tools, and a "go/no-go" gauge. This tool uses the Black Copper rings in combination with PEX clamp or crimp fittings to make connections. For crimping 1" PEX the 1" Crimp tool may be used. These PEX-al-PEX chamfering PEX tools prepare Multicor and other PEX-Al-PEX Tubing for making connections. It cleans the inside of the tubing and re-rounds it for easier connections.

Choosing the Ideal Tool
ProPEX Expander Tool
The Uponor (Wirsbo) ProPEX Expander system is perhaps the most widely used PEX system by professionals in the United States. This system makes use of the Milwaukee ProPEX Expander Tool, ProPEX Fittings, ProPEX Rings, and PEX-a tubing. If PEX-a tubing (Engel method) is not used, the connections will fail. This system makes strong reliable connections that have never failed in the field. The Uponor (Wirsbo) ProPEX Expander Tool is available in three models: the M12, M18, and the ProPEX 201. The M12 Model is compatible with PEX sizes ranging from 3/8" to 1". The M18 Model has a slightly larger range and is compatible with PEX sizes ranging from 1" to 1-1/2". The ProPEX 201 Model is strictly used for commercial projects utilizing 2" PEX. The Milwaukee ProPEX Expander Tool utilizes different size heads, each dedicated to a specific PEX size. Each of the Milwaukee ProPEX Expander Tools can be purchased separate from the ProPEX heads, or in packages that include ProPEX heads as well.
PEX Clamp Tool
The PEX Clamp System is the most simple and most commonly used by DIYs, however this system is also popular with professionals in certain areas of the United States. The PEX Clamp Tool is compatible with Rifeng Crimp Fittings, and utilizes Stainless Steel Clamps to secure a successful connection. The Clamp Tool is perhaps the easiest to use and the most economical. The PEX Clamp System can be used with any standard ASTM size PEX pipe, with the exception of PEX-AL-PEX. The PEX Clamp Tool can be utilized with PEX ranging in size from 3/8" to 1".
PEX Crimp Tool
The PEX Crimp System is similar to the PEX Clamp Tool in that it is also compatible with Rifeng Crimp Fittings. The main difference between the PEX Clamp Tool and the PEX Crimp tool is the rings that are utilized when securing connections. Unlike the PEX Clamp Tool, the PEX Crimp Tool utilizes Copper Crimp Rings to secure a successful connection. Viega PEX Press Tool

The Viega PEX Press Tool is compatible with Viega Press fittings and utilizes PEX Press Sleeves to secure a successful connection. The Viega PEX Press Tool is known for its ease of use and strong connections. The Press technology is unique to Viega and has been used for many years. It is commonly used with Viega FostaPEX Tubing, but is compatible with any standard ASTM size PEX pipe. The Viega PEX Press Tool is compatible with PEX sizes ranging in size from 3/8" to 1" and can be purchased in Kits that can handle 3/8" to 1" PEX or models dedicated to a single size of up to 1-1/2" PEX.
PEX Attachment Tools
PEX to Wood Attachment Tools
PEX to Wood Attachment Tools are utilized to attach PEX Tubing to wood quickly, easily, and with a professional appearance. Manual Clip Guns and Pneumatic Clip Guns are used to secure PEX Tubing to the surface of a subfloor. These types of installation are common in PEX Plumbing and Radiant Heat Systems. PEX Wood Attachment Tools utilize metal or plastic staples to secure PEX to the subfloor. PEX to Wood Attachment Tools are compatible with PEX sizes ranging in size from 3/8" to 3/4".
Manual Foam Stapler
Manual Foam Staplers are used to secure PEX tubing to rigid insulation. Manual Foam Staplers can be used to secure PEX tubing to foam board or tarp insulation such as styrofoam, polystyrene, and polyurethane. PEX Tube Cutters
PEX Tube Cutters are used for making clean, straight cuts when installing PEX Tubing. Tube Cutters are available in plastic, metal, and metal ratchet style models. Standard Tube Cutters are ideal when working with PEX ranging in size from 3/8" to 1". However, a large dimension tube cutter is available by Uponor (Wirsbo) which handles PEX ranging in size from 1" to 2".
PEX-Al-PEX requires the use of a Chamfering Tool to prep PEX-Al-PEX for a connection. A chamfering tool will ensure a smooth surface is provided prior to connecting a PEX-Al-PEX Fitting to PEX-Al-PEX Tubing. The utilization of a Chamfering tool will help ensure your PEX-Al-PEX connections are secure and leak-free connection.
