Comments about 1-1/4" Spirotrap Drain Brass Dirt Separators with removable head (Female Thread):

Installed this unit on my Hydronic heating system to compliment the Spirotherm Air Eliminator(another quality product) I had already installed. Elegant design, easy installation and it started working immediately. Heavy, solid brass and no moving parts - easy to maintain. Should outlast the boiler itself. Highly recommended.

Comments about 1" Spirotrap Drain Brass Dirt Separators with removable head (Female Thread):

The manual on my new high efficiency boiler highly recommended a dirt separator - especially on old radiator systems. I have old cast iron radiators so there is a lot of gunk in the system. I backflushed the system before I started hooking things up, and got lots of gunk out. I put this in and it seems to be getting out a lot of stuff. I looked at others and liked this design. Some of the others had a replaceable filter element, and the element was around $80. This seems like it will do the job and no element to replace. The drain on the bottom is also very cleverly designed.

                Q:

What direction is right side up, I assume it is upside down in the picture, and the decal is right side up, the included instructions are of course very poor and do not indicate, any input is greatly appreciated.

Indeed - it is upside down in the picture. The unit hangs down from the
piping with the decal right side up.

The main body with the drain tap should be facing straight down when piped up. This will allow the separator to collect the debris and enable you to flush it out if needed.

It must be mounted with the cap and chain at the bottom in order to drain.

If you look at the photos on the spirotherm web site, they are correct.
                  http://www.spirotherm.com/products/dirt-separation
                  The brochure http://www.spirotherm.com/sites/default/files/JR-2.pdf shows
them correctly. The air separator goes up, and on the dirt separator, it
goes down, with the drain on the downside.

Is it brass or steel? One place says steel and heading says brass.

Casing is brass. I did not take mine apart so I cannot say for certain if
there is a steel screen or strainer inside but if there is I would imagine
it would be stainless to resist corrosion caused by boiler water.

F.W.I.W. - Mine is brass but I believe it may have a stainless steel mesh inside. The one pictured looks the same. I’m sure the housing is NOT steel.

This item is primarily brass (the main body, threads, etc) the actual
mechanism that traps the dirt is a stainless steel mesh cylinder inside.
There is no mild steel on this item.
