Works but takes a while to get hot

Comments about T-KJr2-OS Takagi Tankless Outdoor Water Heater (Natural Gas):

I have had this installed outside for a week here in CA. It is winter and in the 40's at night. I have had to turn the temperature up to the highest setting to be able to get hot water in the house. It still takes a minute or two to get hot water. We have 2 baths in our house. Other than that, everything else works fine. I do wish we went with a model a little more powerful than this one. My plumber also asked me to buy a "tankless installation kit" that was about $100 with this item.

Comments about T-KJr2-OS Takagi Tankless Water Heater, Outdoor (Propane):

Takagi is the oldest tankless water heater on the market. They have a 70 yr. history which started in Japan. When I built my home and looking at a way to never run out of hot water, my research led me to Takagi. Replaced one indoors and put on outside wall. It works GREAT.

How many watts of electrical power are needed by this bad boy? I would like to wire in a stand-by, battery-operated power inverter in case of a power outage.

This runs on standard 110/120 AC outlet. You only power a circuit board.

Mine is a natural gas model and is only using electricity to fire the burner. No where does it state wattage; it's just labelled, "120 volts, less than 3 amps." J.

      A:

We would not recommend using an outdoor unit in an area where temperatures get below freezing. You would need to contact Takagi directly in order to make modifications for altitudes higher than 6,000 feet.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

I think Takagi has specified that the outdoor unit should not be sold where winter temperatures fall below an occasional +10 degrees.
You'll probably want to ask Takagi themselves--they have a couple of U.S. 800 numbers. J.

This particular one needs to be wired to 110. I do not know if they make a battery start and that would be a brilliant idea. You should contact the company! J.T.

      A:

I think it would be difficult due to the piping for gas or propane. If DC can be converted to 120 AC, there is a possibility it could work.

Not only the start is electric, but it also has an internal computer, a fan

We have had no freeze up problems as where we live in Ca it seldom gets below freezing. We cannot speak for North/ South Dakota, Minnesota or the Eastern Seaboard etc.

      A:

The unit will protect itself from freezing as long as it has power to the unit. The unit will not protect the pipes to and from the heater. Good freeze protection practices will be required for the plumbing outside ie locating the unit and plumbing in a outdoor cabinet or heat tape and insulate the exposed plumbing.

      A:

Our coldest weather in the eleven years I've lived here started two weeks after installation of our outdoor-mount Takagi tankless heater. It dropped to 10 degrees, and since the heater is meant to be good to 20, we left the water running, just enough to move, not enough to fire the heater. We live in a part of the world where it so rarely gets below 25 degrees F. that leaving the water on a trickle is the common way to keep the pipes from freezing.
This last winter the coldest nighttime temperature has been 22F and the heater has been fine. We love it!

      A:

Takagi water heater has an anti-freeze devise, which warms up the heat
exchanger. If this might be not enough it is better to use a blend of water
and antifreeze (propylene glycol) solution, in proportions according to
lowest expected temperature. But take into account that glycol-water blends
are more viscous than pure water and perhaps a bigger pump would be needed.

Takagi outdoor tankless water heaters do have freeze protection, but they are only designed for installation in mild, temperate climates. Keep in mind, also, that the freeze protection cannot function during a power outage.
