Comments about 1" x 1/8" Black Hexagon Bushing:

Yet again, Pex Supply not only had in-stock another (surprisingly?) hard-to-find item, but got it to me within 24 hours!

This is why I have, and will continue to, come back to Pex Supply for all my future needs!

Convert single pipe steam radiator

Comments about 1-1/4" x 1/2" Black Hexagon Bushing:

This is what you need to convert your single pipe steam radiator to hydronic/water. Remove the old fitting with a 3/4" socket, breaker bar, and a long pipe for leverage. Be careful when installing the fitting not to crack the radiator cast iron.

I did crack two radiators by turning this in too far. Remember these are TAPERED threads so the fitting gets tighter as you turn and the leverage can expand and crack the radiator. I used an old 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" bushing with a lot of J-B Weld to repair the radiator, then installed this fitting into the bushing after the JBWeld hardened. I was able to glue and seal the radiator crack via the large bushing opening. most radiators have 1 1/2" NPT openings top and bottom.

disclaimer: Not all old single pipe radiators are suitable for conversion. Ward is an American brand, perhaps the last one.

Perfect for cast iron radiators

Comments about 1-1/4" x 1/2" Black Hexagon Bushing:

I have learned the hard way that using NPT tapered pipe fittings with cast iron radiators runs a significant risk of cracking the cast iron. PexSupply sells the proper bushings to use with the wonderful Danfoss thermostatic valves. Very few professionals seem to know this and I commend PexSupply for selling the proper IPS (Iron Pipe Straight) bushings.

  • 1-1/2" x 1" Black Hexagon Bushing

    Q:

This may sound odd, but can the inside diameter opening of this 1-1/2 x 1 in reducer bushing be attached to a threaded male pipe on either side of the bushing? I know I can thread a 1 inch pipe through the hex nut side of the bushing, but what about the other side? Or would I need a left hand threaded pipe to come in the other way?

No. The thread is NPT so it is tapered. About left threaded option... I
don't know if there is left threaded NPT.

      A:

The internal thread is a tapered thread, so it will be smaller at the bottom. You would need an undersized thread on the pipe you are installing. Also the thread will not seal tight as the tapers will be in opposite directions.

      A:

Not if you want it to seal. You wouldn't need left hand threads to come in from the back side but the threads are tapered so the taper would be backwards. You might get it to go but there wouldn't be much surface area for a seal.
If it were straight taper or parallel threads it wouldn't matter which side you threaded in to.

Is the threads on a 1/8 air valve the same as a1x1/8 black bushing?

Yup, it is. I’ve used these bushings before to adapt air vent valves onto
      steam convectors.

Yes, it is standard 1/8 NPT thread as far as I know.

If both of them have pipe fitting threads, they should work. Good luck with your project.

      A:

What are the threads on the air valve? They would have to tapered NPT
      threads to match the bushing.
What is your application? I wouldn't prefer black steel pipe for
compressed air. OK for natural gas.
