Watts 1170-M2, L1170-M2 Hot Water Temperature Control Valves are specifically designed for mixing hot and cold water on hot water supply systems. They can be used for a variety of applications to reduce the temperature of the hot water from the system, and are ideal for radiant heat applications. This series features a "double throttling" design which combines the control of the hot and cold water to provide a sensitive response to changes in water temperature passing through the mixing chamber. The Watts 1170-M2 can be set to any temperature between 90+F and 160+F (60+F and 120+F for model L1170-M2) with flow rates as low as 0.5 gpm and as high as 23 gpm. The superior flow characteristics of this valve provide accurate temperature control to the requirements of ASSE 1017 across the rated flow range. These valves also provide additional safety as they restrict mixed water out to a drip upon loss of cold water supply to the valve. As an added feature, the 1170-M2, L1170-M2 series incorporates integral check valves and filter washers in both the hot and cold water inlets to protect against cross flow. Maximum Pressure: 150psi (10 bar).

        I use this product to bring the water temp from a solar hot water storage tank down to safe levels for use.

        The unit installs easily and comes preset for 120 degrees. Most people will not need to touch it, but it is adjustable for situations which need water temps higher or lower than the preset value. Once adjusted, you screw the top back down and it does not change.

          What is so "lead" about this 3/4 1170M2-US valve compared to the " lead free 3/4 LF1170M2-US" model? Do some folks use the 3/4 1170M2-US on domestic hot water because the lead content is so little? I ask because this model 3/4 1170M2-US on some sites are considered lead free also.

            My use of the 3/4 1170M2-US valve is in a solar hot water circuit in Phoenix, AZ that is used primarily for hot water for bathrooms (showers and sinks) in a house where the youngest resident is over 65. Thus even when that hot water is used to wash dishes and glassware, any minuscule amount of residual lead will not cause retardation in young, developing brains. The particular application required a valve with threaded fittings for installation after all piping was soldered as well as for no-solder replacement should the originally-installed valve fail.

            Looks like the lead free one is made of brass, instead of bronze. I don't
            know how much lead is in bronze.

            only thing I can think of is maybe the leadcontent in the solder used to sweat it to the piping it is being installed/ connected to. There might be a small amount in an internal valve seat pressed or sweated inside the unit.  Any further question of lead used in the construction of or assebly of the item should be directed to the manufacturer.  Realistically though, this is only used on the hot water side of your piping system. Unless you are using the hot taps to drink from or cook with, there should be no issue in the first place.

            "Lead-free" models contain less than 0.25% lead, which is the maximum lead content allowed by code in California and Vermont. A similar law is scheduled to go into effect nationally in January 2014 (only applies to new installations).
