When replacing 35 year old boiler, existing unit leaked (due to crack in outlet). Replaced with same unit. No problem, fit directly into unlst/outlet piping

Comments about Watts S1156F 1/2" Union Solder Iron Pressure Regulator:

This was purchased to replace a 20 year old unit during a much larger gas/hot water system refurb.

The old unit was still functioning o.k., but a previous owner had lost the adjusting nut and quick fill lever off the top and it had been getting quite a workout over the last couple of years because of several leaking zone valves, so I figured I'd be on the safe side and start with a new unit.

I really like this sweat / union - NPT model because replacement was incredibly easy. Since it was replacing the exact same model I didn't even need to remove and re-sweat the union part of the fitting onto the 1/2" copper supply line. I just left the old union fitting on and used the new fibre washer that came with the new unit and everything went together perfect with no leaks, ... about a 5 minute job. Just unscrew the old one, replace the washer and screw in the new one. It has been working perfectly since the switch out.

The only problem I experienced was that the unit was supposed to come pre-set to 15 lbs. But, it was actually more like 11 1/2 lbs. I have a very high quality oil filled gauge on the system that measures 0-30 psi in 1/2 psi increments. I let the system fill the first time and it only came up to 11 1/2 lbs. I dropped pressure in the system and let it re-pressurize several times and it was exactly the same each time, around 11 1/2 lbs. However, the adjustment procedure in the instructions that come with the unit were simple and easy and it was no problem at all to get it re-set to 15 lbs. The unit has kept the system right at 15 lbs. perfectly over the last few months. I only mention this because it would be adviseable to make sure you check the pressure manually when you first pressurize the system rather than rely on the preset value. If your expansion tank is charged with 12 lbs of air, you'll want the water in your system to be a couple of lbs. higher.
