Installing the liner went quickly. As others have suggested, check the condition of the door insulating blanket (behind the door refractory) since it does not come with the combustion chamber kit. Order both if you are not sure. Mine was OK after 20 years. Prep is very important so make sure you have the right brushes and a sacrificial shop vac. Clean everything before starting to install the new liner! My vac was so dirty after the job that I threw it away. The firebox walls need to be very clean for the new liner to stick properly so get them as clean as possible. And carefully follow the "curing" procedure... slowly bring the furnace up to temp in short bursts per the directions.

Comments about Combustion Chamber Replacement for 66/68 Series Boilers:

Installing this kit was the easier part of the job. Removing the front of the combustion chamber was a bit more of a challenge. Had to replace 2 broken studs. Luckily my local auto parts store had ones that fit. As someone else pointed out, make sure to also order the Cerablanket Front Access Plate Insulation (Part #591-221-054). It will likely also need to be replaced and only costs an additional $5. Also, the rope combustion chamber cover gasket has double sided tape which comes with one side stuck to the rope. It is hard to remove the backing without pulling the tape off the rope, but it can be done with some patience. This tape holds the rope gasket to the cover for re-installation (which is also a little tricky) but I managed get it all together and it seems to be working fine.

My combustion chamber liner had disintegrated and I decided to save money and do the job myself. Although I tried to be very careful I broke off a bolt that secured the burner flange which I had to drill out and tap. I also had to drill and split one of the four nuts that secured the cast iron door as it was rusted fast. I would recommend running a die over the threads of the four studs and coating with anti-seize compound before reassembly in case you would have to do this job in the future. Wire brush burner flange bolts and anti-seize them too. I thoroughly cleaned and wirebrushed the chamber interior. Installation of liner was easy although I wasn't sure how evenly the waterglass was supposed to be spread over chamber bottom as the directions didn't specify. Also, the adhesive on the high-temp rope gasket was totally dried out and wouldn't stick to the door so I used contact cement to hold it in place until door was bolted back on. It helps to thorougly clean out the gasket groove in the door before applying the rope. I'm sure I saved a lot of money by doing the job myself because it was rather time consuming partly due to rusted nuts and bolts, and I figured I did a more careful, thorough job than the furnace guys would have done. My ceroblanket insulation that is sandwiched between outer chamber liner and door was in ruins so play it safe and order this when ordering the liner kit. You can't replace the door liner if you need a new ceroblanket and it costs only about 5 bucks.
