We had three of these units installed in 2 old 1930's building that has many old radiators. The system has ran without a hitch since 2012. The system regulates the water flow and temperature by a thermostat outside and inside. The system is easy to monitor and makes the Maintenance Departments easier and more efficient. It has gone through 2 extreme temperature winters in very inefficient insulated buildings without a hitch. Very easily the best piece of equipment in use in our buildings. Highly recommended

I live in Northern Illinois whare we have some fairly unpredictable Winter months and my house sits on top of a hill and my driveway looks like a ski slope. When we built the house 13 years ago I had begun to research a hydronic snowment application and last year I was finally able to put together enough monies to have a 5" thick concrete driveway poured with 3000 feet of 3/4" Pex installed in the concrete. This boiler is the backbone of the system and its efficiencies were definitely taken into consideration. Lets face it, the worst energy application one could have is to be throwing BTU's at concrete to melt snow & ice. I kept the installation simple with no automatic controls to sense slab temp or outdoors moisture and that was my choice. I had a day last Winter that we had minimally 1/8" of ice on my driveway and we had 30 mph winds with a windchill factor of zero. I turned the system on after all was done and in 1.5 hours it was melted and had run off. Sure beats me trying to get rid of it by hand. The boiler is as expected and I am about to install a indirect hot water heater and use it for that purpose as well.

This boiler replaced a pair of older Dunkirk boilers. The Dunkirks were the most unreliable pieces of junk ever sold I think, and the company making them were HORRIBLE at providing warranty repair service. The Mclain Ultra 230 is generations ahead in technology with a microprocessor boiler control, multiple levels of programming, diagnostics and the ability to make the boiler operate to your individual installation. Mine supplies hot water to three fan/coil air handlers covering four heat zones in the hose and a DHW heat exchanger. It took me a few minutes to program the boiler to my system and it has operated flawlessly ever since. I had Weil Mclain come to the house to look over the installation and they measured the exhaust gases which were within 0.01% of the specified CO2 levels. The CO emissions were exceptionally low as well. My measured eifficiency was about 93% with an outside air temp of 29 degrees. Not too shabby!

I have installed this boiler in my 7,000 sqft home. It supplies hot water to three fan/coil air handler's covering four zones in the house. It also supplies an 80 gallon hot water heat exchanger. Ive followed the installation schematics exactly and used the prefabricated header supplied by Mcclain. I have six Taco pumps running the various fan coils and DHW heat exchanger and all my lines are insulated. I had a manufacturers Rep come out to inspect the installation and got the thumbs up. We measured the exhaust gases and found almost perfect CO2 and carbon monoxide readings. My measured efficiency was 92.7%. I've been using the unit through half of this first winter and the results are excellent so far. It is a vast, vast improvement over my old Dunkirk non-modulating boiler. The microprocessor controls are decades more advanced than the ancient technology of the old clunker. I'm very happy with this boiler and would highly recommend it!

Comments about Ultra 230 - 183,000 BTU Output High Efficiency Boiler (Nat Gas):

I installed this boiler following one of the many plumbing schematics included in the manufacturer's manual. It fired right up first time and has been working fine for a month now.
Positives-small and light for a 183K btu/hr boiler, quiet, efficient, intake and output heat sensors regulate the heat modulation.
Negatives-only time will tell, I added the water conditioner that came with the boiler to protect the aluminum heat exchanger, but don't know what the life expectancy is. The list of annual maintenance before firing up each fall is extensive. I am unable to check the combustion gasses for CO and CO2 emissions as I do not have the equipment so I can't fine tune the venturi. I am hoping it came preset right from the factory. Also, since this is a condensing boiler, it produces a small amount of water when it is burning which has to be collected or drained.

Keep in mind that condensing boilers are not able to achieve their full efficiency ratings when they are used to produce "high-temperature" water (above approximately 150°F).

This boiler is designed to operate as part of a closed heating loop. This means that it continuously cycles and reheats the same water (for many years, ideally). The only water supply to the unit would be from a pressure reducing fill valve connected to the boiler and a water supply line. It offsets any minor water loss from valves, air eliminators, etc.

A thankless water heater is not needed with this boiler to operate. If you want to use it for domestic hot water you'll need to add a heat exchanger water tank. The water that circulates in these boilers contains ph adjusting chemicals to preserve the slimjnim heat exchanger.

This boiler will operate independently of an hot water system. You can heat your home with it and continue to use your tankless water heater.

This unit has an IBR output rating of 183,000 and a DOE BTU rating of 207,000. We use the IBR ratings on the site. They assume that the boiler is located in an unheated space and that the heat lost from the boiler and its surrounding piping is wasted. The DOE rating (which will always be higher) assumes the boiler occupies a heated space. The 95.4% efficiency rating Weil-McLain lists uses the DOE rating and somewhere between the 46 and 230 BTU possible input ratings of the boiler.

You can purchase a circulator zone controller. Weil-Mclain sells the WMCR-6 and the WMCR-4E expanders that would handle up to 10 circulators. The boiler control signal would come from X X on the WMCR and connect to Heat Deamand 2, P15, terminals 1 & 2. The DHW would be connected to Heat Demand 1, P15, terminals 4 & 5.
