I've been using these thermostats in place of Honeywell's Vision Pro (including the IAQ) for a couple of years now. Not only are they less expensive than the IAQ, the White-Rodgers stat also has a dedicated dehumidify terminal which I use to slow the blower speed down to remove more humidity. So far I've been able to REMOVE noisy, bulky stand-alone dehumidifiers and let the central HVAC system handle the humidity, even at coastal locations.

Pros:
* Remote sensors w/programmable weighting -- Think of it as a poor man's zoning system. Can program it to focus on the living areas during the day, bedrooms at night. Or the window'd section of an office in the afternoon sun vs. morning.
* Dedicated dehumidify terminal - allows you to use a standard AC to remove more humidity, without the cost and unreliability of multi-stage systems.
* Humidity displayed on main screen, as is the ability to change the humidity setting.
* Easy to program -- Easier to set up than Honeywell's
* Bright blue backlit screen -- Easier to read than Honeywell's. Adjustable brightness.
* Cool Savings mode -- This very gradually increases the setpoint to compensate for the fact that the AC has run for a long period of time (removing much humidity) and people will feel comfortable at warmer temps. Good for a ~10-20% savings if configured right.
* 1-800 number for customer support/programming help. They even include a sticker you can leave for the customer so WR can walk them through the programming after you leave.
* Staging selectable by temperature (FA) or logic (SL). I prefer the SL setting.
* Great for dual fuel -- can set the balance points manually if you have an outdoor sensor attached OR let the stat use its own logic. Even with 18F temps, I was able to heat my home 100% by heat pump with no backup.

Cons:
* Only supports one remote sensor. Previous WR stats supported 3 inside + 1 outside. Now you can only use 1 remote sensor + the stat's internal sensor
* Doesn't display heating & cooling setpoints simultaneously. If you're running in Auto Changeover, and want the opposite of what it's doing (heating instead of cooling, etc) you'll have to manually force it to heat or cool as it's switchover is determined by the programmed heat/cool setpoints.
* Manual not entirely clear on how various functions work.
* No "consumer" manual included, just a combined installer/owner manual. Not good if you have customers who like to play with things.
* "Temperature Limit" displayed on screen 24/7 when you program temperature setpoint limits.
* Simplistic recovery algorithm -- It seems this runs a straight x minutes per degree for recovery. Honeywell's stats seem to learn how the system performs and use some calculus to determine this.

Overall, a great, if slightly imperfect stat. Haven't found anything better yet.

Thermostat needed to be replaced under warranty because the Program Fan mode was erratic. Replacement unit seems to be working good. I was not happy that I had to pay $11 and change to send back the bad unit. That adds to the overall cost of the thermostat. Seems like Pex Supply should provide free shipping back to them because they supplied me with a defective unit to begin with. They also mixed up the exchange of the old and new unit royally. I have down rated the thermostat from a 4 star to a 2 star for this reason.

Quality Thermostat

Comments about Programmable, 2H/2C, Big Blue Digitial Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat:

This thermostat does everything I wanted. I use it with a dual fuel heat pump system. It gives me the flexibility to lock out the heat pump at a certain outdoor temp because I also installed an outdoor sensor. It also allows me to lock out the expensive propane backup until the outdoor temp gets below a certain temp. I would recommend this for anyone utilizing a dual fuel system. Only negative is the clicking from the thermostat when it enables or disables the system.

Once you read and understand the programming information, the install is a tasty piece of cake. Performs well as "advertised" with no regrets. A must up-sell and should be recommended to every customer up-front. No system is complete without it.

I really like the Big Blue Digital Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat by WHITE RODGERS except that the first one I bought failed after 1.5 years.
PexSupply gave me credit for the first one and I used it to buy another one. If the first one would not have failed I would have given it 5 stars.

Thermostats that can be locked

Comments about Programmable, 2H/2C, Big Blue Digitial Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat:

I required two thermostats that had the means to allow me to lock the desired heat temps which this product does by simply using a 3-digit code. I found it quite easy to program the daily times and temperatures (M-F, Sat. and Sun.) I rent portions of my home and find it necessary to be able to control the temperature during my absence. This is a great product that does much more than I stated above (i.e. air conditioning control, heat pumps, etc.)

Professional Grade Thermostat

Comments about Programmable, 2H/2C, Big Blue Digitial Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat:

This is a truly configurable thermostat, great features but.... and a big one... contrary to the product instructions and advertised features, the fan is not truly programmable; when set to "fan on program", it is supposed to be on for that program period, but when it reaches the set temperature, the blower goes off with the compressor. Called Emerson (WR), and they confirmed it is not programmable.

Comments about Programmable, 2H/2C, Big Blue Digitial Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat:

Being a HVAC Tech. I had to add a hunidity control and relays to get the humidity I wanted that was allowed with a warmer OA temperature. Now I have it built into the thermostat. I have been telling people for years of the failings of the standard humidity control. Now it is built in with reset to the OA Temp. It also has a nice screen and easy to navigate functions. I'm Happy and my wife can read the numbers easily.

  • Programmable, 2H/2C, Big Blue Digitial Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat

    Q:

I have a WHITE-RODGERS PRP-SPEC#70COMFORT SET SINGLE STAGE DIGITAL NON-PROGRAMMABLE thermostat (battery powered). Is the Programmable, 2H/2C, Big Blue Digitial Touchscreen Humidity Thermostat by WHITE RODGERS compatible, and does it have the option of being battery operated?

Yes, it is battery operated also.

      A:

yes, it is compatable, you can set it to run single stage if needed, and
you can run on battery power if needed but being an lcd touchscreen it
will eat up batteries faster than a traditional thermostat.

      A:

Should be an easy change-out for you. Make sure you take note of which wires go to which terminals and match those up with the same terminals on the new thermostat. Also make sure you shut off power to the air handler/furnace before undertaking this otherwise you stand the chance of shorting out the low voltage transformer if you short or ground out the wires when moving them around.
The Blue Humidity has no problem running on battery. It also is "power stealing" so it'll sip a little bit of power off the air handler's transformer via the cool/heat relays to extend battery life. You can disable the power stealing functions if need be.
There are two downsides to not providing this thermostat with a common 24v line: 1) Backlight will only operate for 10 seconds at a time if on battery (continuous backlight is an option with hardwired power), 2) can't use remote sensors with the stat on battery as the sensors need 24v (fed from the thermostat) to operate.

      first question:
I don't see why not. It would probably be an overkill to get something
like this to control something simple. but it is your money and your
      reasons.
      2nd question
Yes this unit can operate on battery power only.

      Javier,
While this seems to be a question for White-Rodgers I will tell you that I had a very old thermostat from 1976 that was a White-Rodgers and was not even close to a digital. I could never really tell where it was set as it was a lever. style. When i contacted them they suggested my current thermostat which I am very happy with. I honestly think my electric bills have been reduced because the digital allows me to know the exact setting. I have the 1F95-1291 Humidity Control Touchscreen Thermostat. I did have my A/C guy install and program it as it seemed a little complex but I couldn't be happier with it. I thought it was a little pricey at first and then I realized it's value. Those cheap thermostats don't even come close. I suggest you contact White-Rodgers as I found them to be very helpful.
      Hope this helps.

In regards to the question first in installer setup of the white Rodgers big Blu stat you are able to set it up for single stage. Also in regards to the question of battery operation yes the big blu is compatible with battery operation but it does limit the capabilities of the remote sensor indoor/or outdoor.

No There is a programmable feature that runs the fan for 10 minutes and then it is off for 20 minutes. This feature is activated if one hour has elapsed without a call for heat from the thermostat. I am not using this feature because I have my air handler programed to run an low flow when fan position is in the "on" on the thermostat. I leave the fan in the "on" position and run it 24/7 in this mode.

I have the Automatic Humiditification (AH) set to Automatic. It was my understanding that this would run the humidifier when needed regardless of whether or not heat was needed. Is this true, because it doesn't seem to be working that way. The humidifier only runs when the furnace is running.
