Choosing the whirlpool that will work perfectly in your bathroom is not an easy decision. There are many different things that one must consider. The information below is provided to help you pick out a perfect whirlpool for your particular tastes!

  • Shape
  • Color

    What is a Whirlpool?
A whirlpool is a special type of tub that has circulation jets in various areas. These jets provide a massage to the bather, a very relaxing and therapeutic feature. A whirlpool is consequently slightly more expensive that a bathtub, but the extra function that it performs makes it well worth the few extra dollars.

    Type  (Show me examples!)
  • 3 Wall Alcove - Also referred to as a recessed tub, this is the most popular style in this product category. The tub is installed against three walls, and thus, only shows one side with a decorative finish.
  • Corner - As the name would imply, a corner tub is installed in the corner. This means that at least two sides will stand against a wall, and one or more decorative sides will be visible.
  • Undermount Tub — Undermount tubs are similar to drop in tubs. However, the tub will be recessed under the platform. Some of these require special undermount installation kits.
  • Drop In / Sunken Tub — Drop in tubs are usually mounted on a platform and have no visible sides. They require a platform on which the tub rests.
  • Air Tub — Hot air tubs differ from spas, or hot tubs, in that they are filled and drained with each use. And unlike whirlpools that circulate a mixture of water and air, air massage tubs have small holes along the bottom of the tub that release a steady stream of air bubbles into the tub. Some units also have additional air holes in the tub back and sides.
  • Free Standing/Clawfoot - This tub is typically built with four legs and stand freely. It is not installed against walls or mounted on a platform, and thus, all sides of the tub are visible. This is a popular selection for families who are seeking a traditional, antique-design tub.

    Drain and Pump Locations
To purchase the correct bathtub, you must know where the drain should be. To figure this out, the following rules apply:
  • End Drain Tub – If you face the tub and the drain is on the right side, you need a right hand tub. Similarly, if you face the tub and the drain is on the left side, you need a left hand tub. In most cases, the pump will be located on the opposite side of the drain. However, pump locations do vary, so never assume it is located in any one spot. Make sure to check the specific product you are thinking about purchasing.
  • Center Drain Tub – In some cases, the drain will be located in the center of the tub. When there is a center drain, a right hand or left hand tub will indicate the location of the pump.
Some drains are reversible, which means you can turn the whirlpool to face either side – thus the location of the drain won’t matter.

    Size
Rectangular, Oval, and Round shaped tubs are all measured in the same way. The three important measurements are length, width, and height. Be sure to have a good idea of how much room you have in your bathroom. You want to be certain that even with the tub installed, you will be able to walk around with ease. As a general rule, there should be at a minimum 60"(L) x 30" (W) of open space immediately in front of the bathtub/whirlpool.

    Shape  (Show me examples!)
Shape is typically a matter of personal preference. We strive to provide you with the largest selection of whirlpools in the industry. Whirlpools are available in the following shapes:
  • Oval
  • Oval inside Rectangle
  • Rectangular
  • Round
  • Triangular

    Color
Most whirlpools come in a variety of colors to match your bathroom décor. This being said, different manufacturers tend to supply different colors. Some of the finishes that whirlpools are available in are as follows:
  • Black
  • Neutrals
  • Shades of Blue
  • Shades of Grey
  • Shades of Red
  • White

    Materials  (Show me examples!)

The two most popular materials are acrylic and cast iron. While Acrylic is cheaper, lighter, and sometimes easier to install, we recommend cast iron more because it keeps the heat in better, lasts longer, is more durable, deadens the splashing sounds of the water, and actually feels better on your feet. Below is a more extensive description of both.
  • Acrylic – Inexpensive material is shiny and can be decorative. It is resistant to cracking, chipping, peeling, and staining. The color runs through the entire tub and will not fade. Acrylic is easy to sanitize with common non-abrasive cleaners and water. Acrylic tubs are available in most colors and shapes. An acrylic tub is adequate, although cast iron will keep heat in longer and will reduce the noise of running water.
  • Cast Iron – The strongest material available for a bathtub. The benefits of cast iron are that it keeps heat in longer, will usually last a lifetime (very durable), will deaden the splashing water sound well, and usually feels better on your feet. The negatives are that it sometimes requires additional structural support in the floor below, can be susceptible to chips (rarely), and is more expensive than acrylic. Cast Iron tubs are available in a variety of colors and shapes.

    Characteristics of “Jets”
The location and number of circulation jets will vary from whirlpool to whirlpool. The more jets, the more places that water will massage your body. Whirlpools typically have anywhere from 2-10 jets.

It should also be noted that some manufacturers have incorporated air jets into their whirlpools. Air jets provide a lighter massaging pattern than water jets do. In addition, they are also much more sanitary. This is because air jets blow out all substances that pass through their channels. This prevents mildew from accumulating, which sometimes can happen in a water jet system if it is not properly maintained.

In regards to comfort, however, the type of jet you select is a matter of personal preference.

    Using A Whirlpool
Bathing in a whirlpool is very relaxing. However, here are some tips that can enhance your cleansing experience.
  • The ideal length of a bath is between 15-20 minutes. You should not exceed 30 minutes for it can be detrimental to your health.
  • The water temperature should be set to your personal liking. However, 98o- 99o F is generally considered the most favorable temperature around the industry.
  • Natural products, when poured into water, will aid in the relaxing process. However, you should not put any chemicals with foaming agents into the tub. Bath salts should not be used in a whirlpool. This can damage the whirlpool tub motor as the water is circulated throughout the tub.
