Great performance, very minor quibles

I am using this in conjunction with a Triangle Tube 110 boiler. It performs excellent and I'm very happy with it. The only minor complaints that I have are related to the piping connections. None of them came out perpendicular to the tank itself. My contractor ended up spending an extra hour plus to get the piping to look decent and not like an Escher drawing. For the cost of this tank I would have expected a little more quality control in this area. but it doesn't diminish what this is actually for and at the end of the day it is down in the basement and it works great. Make sure you put a heat trap on your cold water line, the bottom of the tank actually does heat up and that heat will travel right up your cold line.

Outer tank rusted through within 2 yrs

In my view, the advertizing from Triangle Tube is deceptive. In claiming that it is a stainless steel system, they obfuscate the fact that only the inner tank is stainless steel. The outer tank, in contact with the boiler water, it just steel and my Smart 40 rusted through in less than two years. I am really ticked off with them for their shoddy material design.

New Tank had Fittings in Different Orientation.

Ordered a replacement tank. The 13 year original started to leak. Figured I would spend the money, so I wouldn't need to do any refitting. Wrong answer! It seems that the manufacturer has changed the orientation of the bungs, for the boiler connections, to the supply lines. My original tank had the boiler and supply lines running perpendicular to each other. The new tank came with bungs and supply fittings running parallel, and inline, to each other. Also, the T&P valve that supply house recommends, has a MIP thread, to install it to the stub out on the tank (just like my old tank). The new tank comes with a MIP stub out for the T&P valve, so you'll need a 3/4" FIP coupler to make it work.

Water heater works great. Getting it to me was a nightmare

The water heater works wonderfully. Hooked up easily and the instructions were very good. The part that was not great was the freight shipping to get it. It took 9 days to get it to my local terminal. I live 4hours from where it was shipped.

Never buy this tank

The outer tank rusted out after 3 years. They never mentioned that this outer tank wasn't stainless steel also. The water is de-aerated through my boiler system so limited to no oxygen in system. This should never have happened. Way to much money for 3 years use.

Good company, ok tank

I researched this tank before I purchased it, and one review said that it rusted out in a very short time. I read also that any boiler or tank will rust if you install it in an uncontrolled environment. So I made sure to install it in a insulated space where condensation would not occur. It is condensation that causes rust. But it started leaking in just 4.5 years. It has a 10 year warranty, so Triangle Tube first worked with me to confirm the tank was bad, an not just the tank's dry well. The tank was bad alright, so after They received some pictures of it and the area around it, they confirmed that it was bad and ended up sending me a new one. I hope it will last 20 years or more this time since these tanks are expensive. I would like to see Triangle Tube make it easier to drain the inner tank. Currently you have to siphon out the water to drain the inner tank while the outer boiler tank has a standard hose bib like a ordinary gas fired water heater. They need to make it easier to drain the inner tank.

Not full stainless steel

In 2012 I thought this was the better way than a hot water coil. I spent $2,700 with the installation. I Found out online after the first leak that these tanks had a lot of issues. I'm going on my third thermostat today, only to find the local plumbing supply stopped selling Smart tanks a few years ago and no longer have the thermostats. I've wasted about $3,500 so far total for 7 years. Which translates to about 4 times what it would have cost for my usage with a coil. They should call these Dumb 40's.....STAY AWAY

2 Leaked

It looks nice and works well until it leaks. The first one started leaking from the upper cold water connector after 4 years. The replacement tank started leaking from the bottom heater connection nipple at the tank after 9 years. Would not recommend based on our history

Q: how much oil will i save with this i currently use 900 gallons of oil approximately 20%used for hot water

Any savings will be based on the boiler that is connected to the indirect water heater. The indirect will have priority over calls for heating.

Q: i just had a triangle tube condensing boiler installed in my house. I'm thinking of adding this water heater to take advantage of the efficiency of the boiler. What else is needed besides this unit and normal plumbing?

You will also need a circulator pump and flanges.

This unit is not a water heater; it is a indirect water heater. Indirect water heaters do not qualify for tax rebates.
