Description

–
Webstone's Radiator Valve Spud Wrench is designed for making radiator valve repairs and can be used on 1/2" to 2" radiator valves.

A radiator valve body is connected to the radiator by a spud. In order to remove the radiator valve a spud wrench such as this is required to loosen the spud. A spud wrench has grooves running down the side which grip a pair of nubs on the interior of the spud as the wrench is inserted into it, tightly securing it. It is a heavy duty tool and made from zinc.

Indispensable

I was replacing a 90 year old 1 inch pipe radiator nipple so I bought the spud wrench hoping it would remove it. Unfortunately it didn't work for the removal, but for installing the new nipple it worked great! In my opinion, the fit tolerance of the wrench inside the pipe is too sloppy for use in its removal, I think it should be a more snug fit. In the extraction attempt it broke off one of the nipple's interior "ribs" but then again it was 90 years old :) However-even though I wish it was a tighter fit- the spud wrench made the installation of the new nipple a breeze & I couldn't have done it without it! The price was right, shipping was very quick & reasonable. Additionally I couldn't find the wrench anywhere locally.

Caution if using for small valves

Does not work well to remove small valves (1/2" and 3/4") . The stud wrench is narrow at the end and on the first valve the wrench snapped in half. Would probably work well for larger valves. Supply house was fast to fix the broken wrench.

Ceap looking cast metal, but the tool works as expect

The tool was much stronger than the brass pipe I was using it on. Doh!

Needs to be more substantial

This spud wrench is a zinc casting, a soft metal. It will install new stuff, but will break in two pieces if used to remove a half-inch or three-quarter inch bushing old enough to require a sturdy wrench and a four-foot helper to get the old bushing off the radiator. I made a spud wrench from a hardened steel 3/4 inch bolt with a 2 inch shoulder and cut off the threaded part. Next, I cut two grooves into the shoulder to make a spud wrench strong enough to overcome the expected resistance. After I got the old bushing off the radiator, I used a wire brush to clean off the rusty thread on the radiator. Used the new spud wrench with Teflon plumber tape to install the new bushing into the radiator. Need the tape to insulate the brass bushing from the cast iron radiator. This avoids galvanic corrosion.
