A fine way to keep the air out.

I suggest to read carefully the usage guide PDF file for this product. I have a large overhead expansion tank and a Weil McLain CGi7. I added the IAS to the horizontal supply for my convector zone. The original installer did not use an IAS and the air would migrate out of the tank by mid-season. My convectors used to get air locked frequently and after installing the IAS so far this season the air is staying in the tank. I chose the larger (1 1/2") IAS to get the 3/4" air port instead of a 1/8" port only useful for bleeders. The 3/4" line runs at an upward slope all the way to the tank. This is important to do. So far, I like the performance.

Q: Should this be installed on the supply or return side of the system when using an older steel (non-bladder) type expansion tank? I have 18" of pipe after the circulator pump on the supply side or a shorter, 12", run of pipe on the return. Is there a preference or significant difference to the installed location?

Normally you would like to place the unit on the supply side, before your circulator.

Yes, this air separator requires 18" of straight pipe before it is installed in the line. It is necessary to have a smooth/straight flow so the air bubbles in the system have time to rise towards the top of the pipe and flow through the air separator properly.
