We installed ours in summer of 2011, and it burned out in about 20 months - not sure how many hours because kids etc.. it would get left on. I recall from somewhere that these bulbs go quicker when turned on for short periods of time. We ended up rewiring to use the 4 watt nightlight (we did not hook it up at initial install) because we have a sconce at the mirror that gives a better quality of light; the light in the fan never quite satisfied, not sure if color or perception of flickering I had. The nightlight is all we use most of the time now because its the first switch and we can see what we need with it. Steve
It is important to understand that burning out the light bulb in this unit has nothing to do with fan or heater in it, and the light bulb in side of that unit is not incandescent bulb, it is fluorescent. Temperature of that bulb is low, so burning out the bulb by socket connections, like hallogen bulbs, is out of question. Regular fluorescent bulb is not dimmable. People often install regular dimmers on fluorescent bulb, and that makes life of the bulb or dimmer very short. If that's not your case, you have two more possibilities. First, if you live in area like I do, you need to filter your voltage. Power surges, most of the time measured in milliseconds, can destroy electronic and electrical equipment including your light bulb, fast. Second, if you bulb was not filled with gas propertlly by manufacturer, and that can happen too, will not have proper life cycle, in you case - around 10000 hours or more. Easy fix is a new bulb and timing test(write down the date of new bulb installation on it), so you can compare it with your first one, and that way eliminate first or second option. Hope this will help a little. Cheers, Z.
Some times things just break. Ours didn't last long either. Could be due to the fact that there's a constant vibration, however small, whenever the fan is on. The element may not have been meant to be used in this particular application. I'm sure the fan manufacturer simply pasted specs from the light bulbs manufacturer. It's a bulb, they go eventually go bad......... Thank you and God bless, Wally
The double duty switch ( on/off/on) is to turn either the nite light on or the main light on.
Hi, Mark! 4 way switch is reference for something totally different. it is a switch that you install between two 3 way switches in order to turn on the single user from more than two locations, and you can add as many as you like in that configuration. You have in your hand a 4* function*switch. there are three switches on that plate. Two regular - ON - OFF switches, and one that doubles for two (ON - OFF - ON). Meaning if you want one thing on, you cannot have another. In this case, if your regular light is ON, you can not have your night light - ON at the same time. You can also choose to alternate heat and fan on that one but I think that would not be practical. I have that exact Panasonic unit in my home, and I also installed few for several customers. That's probably one of the best units on the market for that price. I never opted for that switch. It's just made for small and tight places, and you have to struggle with to many wires in one box. Instead of that my favorite is usually four wall switch boxes in line. Each one dedicated to one function on that Panasonic unit. Heat gets regular ON - OFF switch; light gets regular ON - OFF switch (remember - you cannot dim fluorescent bulbs in that unit so no dimmers for that one); fan usually gets push button timer switch 1 to 60 minutes(that gives you a chance to get rid of moisture and forget that fan is on - it wont work on heat, most of these timers do not have enough amps for that heater); and night light gets switch with motion detector (so that kids do not wonder much around the dark and pee on the wrong places around the bathroom). I hope this helps a bit, and all the best with your project. Zoran - St. Pete, Fl p,s - if you are working with live wires please always remember that good electrician makes mistake only once!
Hi, The switches, at least the way ours is wired... Top switch is the on-off-on, nightlight, off or brighter light. Middle switch is the exhaust fan, on or off Bottom switch is the heater, on or off. We replaced a similar fan/light/heater unit with the Panasonic. We already had the necessary wall switches in place. Technically you could have the light, exhaust and heater all on at the same time, although we never have used ours like that. Hope that helps. Linda Sent from my iPad
The switch with two operations is for the light and the nightlight. One way for the light and opposite for nightlight. Contact Panasonic if installation instructions were not included. It's probably smartest to hire this job out for safety considerations. A simpler method is to use two pair of double switches in a double gang box. It's a lot of wires going into one box and is very crowded. https://www.google.com/search?q=decora+double+switch&hl=en&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch
I have four switches for mine-one is light on/off, one is exhaust on/off, one is heat on/off, and the last is nightlight on/off. Mine is actually two switches with two switches in each. it can be however your electrician does it but you do need 4 in total. I have no idea about doubling up.
Mark, I purchased the fan, however, didn't purchase this specific switch. I just bought two double gang light switches so I have each function on it's own switch (night light, light, fan & heater). This one you mentioned is good if you only have 1 gang free in your box. You can put the light/fan on the same switch and I assume the night light & heater would be on the other two. Not sure if this helps you but just wanted to let you know you don't need to use this specific switch per se' Vinny
with this unit you have ability to switch the light, fan and heat independently. I have a three position wall switch that controls each operation separately. there is a night light function and a separate wire for that feature. you can add a switch for that as well. I don't use the night light on my unit. Hope this helps you. Sent from my iPad
The grille and bulb cover are both made of hard plastic.
No, this unit does not come with the switch.
