8" Replacement Stem for 12" 500 Series Wall Faucets

For replacing an older model but still makes no sense this did not have female threads at the "pinched" end for the handle connection. I had to tap thread myself to use!

I had to order a brass stem for my Mansfield outdoor sillcock. The part number is: M-123-0093 which is 12" long from end to end. I received the part in good condition and performed the replacement. After replacing the brass stem with a new packing nut and O-ring, everything worked fine except when I connected my hose to the sillcock. Under pressure, I noticed that there was a noticeable leak from behind the handle (which I also replaced). My sillcock has a packing nut with a right hand thread (white in color). The new stem comes with all the parts included. I had to remove the packing nut washer that comes on the brass stem because it's the larger washer for a LEFT hand packing nut. I simply removed the larger one and replaced it with the smaller one which is included in the package. PRO TIP: the packing nut washers included with the brass stems are make out of graphite which is very rigid. After much tinkering and frustration, I realized that the graphite packing washers included with the stem do not conform to the back side of the packing nut. Therefore, the graphite washer does not make a good seal. I bought a sillcock repair kit at the hardware store. The packing nut washer in the repair kit happens to be a hard rubber compound not graphite. The hard rubber conforms much better and therefore makes a good seal against the back of the packing nut. This is something that I had to figure out on my own. I hope it helps.

I took a chance and tried both the Prier and Shark Bite 8" replacements stems for my Watts frost free outdoor faucet. Unfortunately neither stem fit the 25 year old Watts faucet. While Watts still makes the 12" stem replacement they no longer manufacture the 8" version. Resigned myself to the fact that plumber will need to cut inside line in order to install new faucet. I do appreciate SupplyHouse online support's attempt to assist me.

I bought the wrong item and had to return it. (Turns out mine was a 400 series). But the original order arrived quickly, and the return process was straightforward and prompt, no hassles. Will definitely use SupplyHouse again.
