Operating in conjunction with your home’s central heating system, a Bypass Flow-Thru Humidifier helps maintain indoor relative humidity at a balanced, healthier, more comfortable 30-to-45 percent. When the indoor humidity level drops below the pre-selected level, a switch inside the humidifier causes fresh water to flow across a porous evaporator pad, where it is exposed to warm, dry air forced through the humidifier by the furnace blower. As the water evaporates, the heating system circulates humidified air throughout the home. A Skuttle Fan-Powered Flow-Thru (Model 2002) operates on the same principle as a Bypass Flow-Thru, except that the warm air is forced through the humidifier by an internal fan, rather than by the furnace blower.

Because these units employ the flow-thru principle of humidification, they use more water than other types of humidifiers. However, Skuttle engineers were the first to reduce Flow-Thru water consumption to the minimum necessary for effective humidification. Electrical consumption is about the same as a 25-watt light bulb. The summer shutoff damper on bypass units increases efficiency and saves energy. Flow-Thrus do not produce harmful contaminants, nor do they release them into the air.

Flow-Thrus are the easiest of all central system humidifier types to maintain. Unless your water is extremely hard, one thorough cleaning per year should be sufficient.
