Description

Skuttle Under Duct Humidifiers are real workhorses that perform well on heat pumps and high-efficiency heating systems. In fact, they are superior to plenum-mount flow-thrus on today’s 90-plus furnaces.

Drum Under Duct units handle more air volume than their plenum-mount counterparts because air flows directly through the ductwork rather than through a 6 in. (15.24 cm) bypass tube. With normal maintenance, they cause no airflow resistance. The humidifiers’ efficient design actually increases airflow around the evaporator pads. The unique mounting frames allow fast, simple removal from the duct for easy cleaning and servicing.

Model 86UD, like plenum-mount drums, uses minimal water and electricity, making it among the most economical and ecologically friendly humidifiers to operate.

Works great

Does the job for 3000sqft. house without sending humidified air through furnace and rusting out electronic air filter

Appears to be an acceptable unit.

This is one of the few humidifiers that mount under a horizontal duct. Pretty low tech so not much in the way of features to wax enthusiastic about. Haven't actually turned it on yet because the heating season is just beginning so cant really comment on performance. One minor quality problem -- the metal frame has poor spot welds and one of the side pieces had broken loose upon arrival. Not a real issue since it was fully secure once screwed into the duct.

Would recommend this product

We had an old Adams / Aprilaire copper disk humidifier, which worked really well for years. Recently it became coated with salt, and the motor died. The replacement cost for a similar unit was >$700.00! The Skuttle was a much more reasonable cost. The hole required was smaller, so I cut a new hole, and closed up the existing hole. The only issue I had was that the frame that mounts to the duct was poorly welded, and fell apart as I was installing it. I managed to glue it together. Once it was installed, there was no issue. The connections were easy, and the unit was light enough that I could install it without help, even while holding it up overhead. I am not a fan of the foam drum, but will see how it holds up. I would get the automatic flush pump, to prevent the clogging with minerals, which is what took out my prior humidifier.

This is a very good product and works as advertised.

I am replacing a similar product that is no longer manufactured (Rainbow in duct humidifier) that lasted over 40 years. We are in a dry winter climate and this product humidifies the whole house (2400 sq ft) very well. There was a minor issue with the humidifier that SupplyHouse immediately responded to and resolved to my satisfaction. They're a very responsive supplier.

On my next humidifier project, i'm getting this again

While mounting in a tight place is not that easy, it does what is supposed to. One does need to seal it to the ductwork as it doesn't close and the air leaks around the frame.

Easy install. Works well but I don't like the drain plug.

Unit is well made and easy to install. I don't like the cheap plastic drain plug. I would try to replace the plug with a drain valve for easier service but it is not a standard of lumping size. 3/8" is too big and 1/4" is too small. I plan on tapping it to be a 3/8" NPT and add a drain valve.
