I don't know why, such a simple device failed on my two year old Weil Mclain boiler. The symptom of the problem was cooler than normal water temperatures in the baseboards, and an inability of the heating system to keep up with demand on a cold day.
Upon investigating the problem, and utilizing the very helpful diagnostic L.E.D. screen on the boiler, I was easily able to determine that the outdoor temperature sensor was reading 30°F over the actual outdoor temperature. This variance is well above the 10° +/- adjustment that the boiler program allows for this sensor and causes the boiler control program to think it is warmer outside than it actually is, thus limiting the water temperature to well under its high temperature cut-off. In my case 180°F.
I bought two sensors and keep one now as a backup. (I'll probably never need one again!) Installation could not be simpler and is accomplished with a screwdriver. The sender wires need to be stripped and are inserted into the sensor by means of a spring tab and a gentle push of the wire into the tabs.

Easy to install outdoor sensor
Took only a few minutes to install drilled a small hole for the wire and attached one end to the outside of the house On the sensor
And the other to the boiler. Very easy and straight forward. A screwdriver and a drill are the tools required.
Q: Is this sensor compatible with the Ultra Series 1 boilers?
