Used this tool to install all of my clamp rings.

The good:
* Positive engagement once you grab the clamp tab.
* Doesn't let go until you're fully engaged.
* Convenient cutter option.
* Feels pretty durable.
* Inexpensive alternative to the expander tool.
* Works on multiple tubing sizes.

The bad:
* The rings wiggle and wander around on the tubing until they're partway engaged. This made it a bit difficult when working in a 4" wide trench, but it was doable. It's part of getting a feel for the clamp ring system.
* You'll be working your pecs if you have to clamp a lot of rings (maybe not a bad thing if you're into that)!
* A few times one of the set pins for the cutter popped into clamp mode when cutting and it only part way cut a ring off leading me to use a pair of side cutters to finish the job. Not generally a problem though unless you're doing a lot of cutting for some reason.

I bought this over the other tools mainly for the cutting feature. The cutting feature on this tool is simply a slide you push down that results in a larger opening where you insert the crimp tab - so you can insert an already-crimped tab (but with tool rotated 90 degrees). This works well enough, but the main issue is that when you are doing normal crimps, the two slides get pushed down. It's also very difficult to start a crimp, since as other reviewers pointed out, the ratchet doesn't engage soon enough to hold onto clamp so you can position it. For the price of this, I would recommend getting the one handed ratcheting tool for just a little more, and use a standard snipping tool to remove clamps. Also, the first one I received had the cutting slides both broken off, but supplyhouse quickly remedied that issue with a replacement.

Pros
does the job
can be used to remove clamps

Cons
requires two hands
cutting slides easily bump down out of position
hard to position clamp due to late ratchet engagement
a little pricey for what it does

Basic Clamp tool

Comments about Heavy Duty PEX Ratchet Clamp & Cutting Tool:

I'm a DIY and needed to tie into PEX plumbing. Tool works but would not recommend for serious use. Hard to use in tight spaces like between floor joist. Handles must be fully open to start crimp and require two hands as they spread to far apart to fit in one hand and I have large hands. Work great when making connection in open space. Would be nice if tool would engage ratchet before clamping to tight to position crimp ring to allow you to engage ring then position clamp for final crimp, but it doesn't. Was able to engage ring then hold tension with one hand, position ring and use both hands to make crimp but not easily. Would probably buy different tool next time.

Comments about Heavy Duty PEX Ratchet Clamp & Cutting Tool:

It's a good quality tool and gets the job done. This was my first PEX job, I'm not a pro, and I had NO leaks, everything worked perfectly.

This is not a one-handed tool, and does take a bit of strength to get it started.

Excellent "Clamper" for the $$$.

Comments about Heavy Duty PEX Ratchet Clamp & Cutting Tool:

Heavy Duty Construction. NOT a big and gawky tool, easy to get in TIGHT places. Made well. Will NOT release if you crimp is not done correctly/and ,or your not fully crimped. Can make solid crimps EVEN when the "side buttons"(push buttons up to make a CUT)are up or down. Many users have complained they break, BUT, one must consider they're "man-made".

Will this tool clamp and cut Apollo brand stainless cinch rings over Apollo fittings?

As this is not a brand that SupplyHouse sells, this cannot be guaranteed. Apollo is a similar Clamp tool and system type so it should be compatible.

I just made sure I clamped it until it quit ratcheting. I had several that twisted on the fitting, but they did not leak. No leaks through out my whole home.

Go-no-go gauges are for testing copper crimp ring connections. You know that a clamp connection was made properly when the tool releases.

The crimp tool they sell that is supposed to remove them is not the answer. You have to take a small screwdriver and pry the end of the clamp over the retention catch and the ring will release.

    Q:

OK, I just got a HydroPex - Heavy Duty PEX Ratchet Clamp & Cutting Tool. What is the cutting tool? When I ordered this I thought the cutting tool would cut the PEX pipe. Next Question is what is the "silver colored" pin in the crimp head for that slides up and down?
Asked on 5/3/2011 by riverwoods from Imnaha, OR

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The cutting tool does not cut PEX pipe - it cuts clamp rings. The silver pin you are referring to performs the cutting functions.
