This particular UV lamp is a "smart" lamp. It senses when there is airflow from your fan and turns the light on when there is air moving in the system. This features greatly extends the life of the lamp. This lamp, as well as all UV lamps, only eliminate bacteria in air that comes into contact with the UV light. Because of this, you will only be filtering the air in your house if the fan is running to circulate the air through the ducting, be this with the fan only option of your furnace or with the heat/air conditioning running.. I have installed these and other UV lights and I am very happy with the results. Rob Logan
The question is somewhat confusing. I'll will answer descriptively. After the lamp is installed its behaviour is dictated by the specific model installed. The lamp needs to be installed following the enclosed instructions. The crux is in having the lamp have a period after the installation so it can detect 'no airflow' condition, and after the air-handler starts to detect the new 'air flow' condition. Afterwards the lamp will turn on upon sensing the airflow caused by the air handler, and after the air-handler stops, the light will remain turned on for the predetermined amount of time depending on the model. When that time passes the light will turn off. If the air-handler runs continuously - the lamp will stay turned on during the whole run. It should not shorten the life of the light bulb, meaning if the life is for 2,000 hrs it should last about that length of time or longer. It is frequent turning on and off that usually shortens the expect life of any fluorescent light bulb. If the air-handler turns on and off, so will the light (turn off will be delayed based on model). Once installed there is no switch for the user to turn the light on or off - except yanking the plug out.
