Good thermocouple AO Smith 18"

Good quality and is working well. Installed easily and the pilot light lit and stayed on after a couple of seconds. Good blue flame. Make sure the pilot flame port is the proper distance from the thermocouple for proper gauging. I had to bend the mount in order to remove the bad one and install the new thermocouple, then bend it back for the proper distance. I deferred to the OEM and probably would have been OK with the Honeywell which I bought as a backup. For the 50 gallon water heater the parts listing called for the 18" but the 24" would have been the correct part. The 18" is a little short in this case.

Thermocouple TC-K18 worked perfectly

The pilot would not stay lit on either of my water heaters, State Select PR650NBRT, with White Rogers gas valve 37C73U 640. I took the complete pilot assembly off, in order to install this thermocouple, and it was perfect. Those water heaters do have 12 years of service on them; replacement is inevitable, but we won't have to replace them in the summer attic heat.

ASK A QUESTION

Q: I have a AO Smith Model XCV 30 100 Serial#C05A061955 I need to replace my thermocouple, as my pilot light is not staying lit. Will any of these on here work with my model. I called a local place and they said I had to buy the whole kit for $80. I would hate to do that if I can just replace the thermocouple. Please help!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

I'm not professional plumber (disclaimer here..) but I had a similar problem. The tank started leaking before the thermocouple was replaced so we replaced the whole heater. I would say that there is some potential liability in working on a water heater such as fire or explosion. Whether it's your personal heater or a customer's it simply something you really don't want to take a chance on it not working correctly. I would at least make sure I had exact manufacturer replacement parts rather than a generic thermocouple. I don't have the technical knowledge to determine if the if the generic kit may do the job and could not sleep at night wondering if I made the right decision or "hoping" there would not be a problem. Even with the $80.00 kit (potential gas leak?) it needs to be installed correctly so be sure your skills are up to the job. Please be careful and best of luck with your repair. Ron
