Work Saving Product

I ordered this rod because my water heater is too close to my roof line to install the rigid anode rod. I read a question and answer about this rod on your website. It looked to be just what I needed. When I got the rod, I was concerned. The sections were about a foot long, with a small joint between each section. It came with NO instructions, so I was concerned about bending the rod at the joints enough to allow me to install it in my water heater. I tested it and it appeared to be flexible enough to bend at an angle to allow me to install it. Before you start, be sure to turn off the water heater and the water line feeding the water heater. After removing my old rod ( I pulled it up a few inches at a time, clamped it with a pair of vice-grips, and cut off the upper piece with a hacksaw). I gently bent the new rod to an angle enough to allow me slide it into my water heater. Note here. Be sure to try and straighten out the rod at each section as you slide it into the water heater, trying to return the rod to as straight as possible. If not, when you start to tighten the rod, it will bang angainst the side of the water heater. Also, be sure to put some teflon tape or pipe dope on the threads of the rod to make sure of no leaks. The rod has been installed for several weeks now and I have not had any problems at all. Seems to be a good product to use. This is also a good time to drain and flush your water heater if you have not already done so. Thank you.

Q: My AOSmith water heater calls for a 33 inch replacement anode rod and I need the flexible style in aluminum due to lack of clearance above. The rod shown is 48". Can this rod be shortened to 33"?

Yes, you can cut it shorter.

Q: How flexible is this rod? I only have 22 inches of clearance above my A.O.Smith waster heater. (All my copper pipes are soldered and I would prefer not to cut them to tip the water heater.) Can I bend and re-bend this rod without it breaking in the 22" above he unit. My present rod is 33 inches long.

This flexible rod comes in links of 6" or 7" sections linked together. So the unit is very flexible and easily manipulated to fit the areas needed. It can be bent and re-bent along the link connectors easily.
