Leaks Over Time
Matched replacement for my (Kenmore branded) AO Smith hybrid electric water heater. 7 months after installation it developed a drip/leak. Replacing the rubber washer on the flex line did not solve the problem. Flex line was not overtightened (common cause of leaks). The plastic, beveled portion of the diptube extends beyond the metal threads. My best guess is something happened to the plastic portion (warped?) and doesn't allow the rubber washer to do it's job. Something a pro may know (I read of people cutting the plastic portion flush with the threads), but was not apparent for a DIYer.
Next step is to add a 3/4" brass coupling and close hex nipple so the rubber washer can seal directly against the brass. Fingers crossed...
