Initial disappointment on install, but good customer service
Unit arrived in good condition. No sign of damage on packaging. Had it professionally installed by a licensed plumber. But after the initial startup, the pilot light would not stay lit. Apparently there gas valve was faulty somewhere. We could ignite the pilot light briefly and the tank would heat up appropriately, but the pilot light kept going out within an hour. Pretty frustrating for a brand new unit, after going through all the labor of installing. So I called customer service - preparing to do battle and expecting a poor experience. But to my surprise, AO smith customer service was fantastic. I spoke to a real, live human being on the first try. He listened to my complaint and agreed with me that I needed a new gas valve. So he promised to have one shipped to my home overnight and sure enough, the new valve arrived the next day. I had to pay the plumber to come back out and drain the tank and swap out the gas valve - but once he did that, everything has worked fine. We've had the unit for a month now and it seems to be operating perfectly.
