It is usually installed horizontally, and this is how I installed it. The FB-38 valve has a built-in check valve to prevent system water loss in case the inlet supply pressure drops below 12 psi. So, you don't need a separate check valve. I hope this helped.
12 psi is the standard pressure setting in hydronic heating systems.
The strainer and gasket for this unit can be purchased as part 118036, available through our website at the link below. http://www.pexsupply.com/Bell-Gossett-118036-Strainer-Gasket-Kit
The strainer and gasket kit can be bought at: http://www.pexsupply.com/Bell-Gossett-118036-Strainer-Gasket-Kit . It doesn't seem that the strainer is sold separably.
FYI - My FB-38 was leaking all over the place because a few of the threads on the black plastic strainer nut broke off. Maybe I tightened it to much? Anyways, after hours of searching for the part on the web, I finally found the part number, and low and behold, PexSupply carries it! It is sku# V14609, and it is only $2.44 last check. It would be great if PexSupply put a "related parts" section on the FB-38 page, because it is really hard to find if you don't have the part number.
That is where the removable strainer is located.
