This is black iron pipe, Galvanize pipe would be bright colored
It is STEEL pipe! The BLACK appearance is the result of treatment applied (like guns) to protect against rust.
Its not galvanized. The pipe between the threads is painted black.
Black pipe/nipple is not galvanized. Black pipe is used for hydronic heating systems and for gas supply. The pipe is made from steel. The "black" refers to the color of paint on the pipe.

Q: Is this piece a 2" pipe that is 4 inches long. Forgive the ignorance, but some of this can be confusing. Is the first measurement always the diameter of the pipe itself and the 2nd measurement the length? Thanks for any information. :)

YES! This pipe is 2" wide (big) and 4" long. See right-side of product display (link below) and you will see longer versions of the same size (2") pipe. Hope this helps.

All black nipples had a residue on them when they are new, mostly oil from manufacture making product. It will also create discolored water when running water through it, that's why it is not used in water supply, except boiler app. Where water is treated. Hope that helps! Sent from my iPad
Q: Based on all the answers -- the length of the thread is either 3/4, 5/8 or 1/2. If anyone can provide the true thread length -- I'd be one happy camper... thanks

The reviews and Q&A are the same for all sizes of a single product. You might be looking at 1/2" x 3" black nipple, but a review or Q&A might apply to a 1/8" close nipple. The threaded length is standard in each case. For any 1/2" NPT, the standard visible external threaded length is about 3/4".
