Excellent brass unions

I used three of these 1" unions when I replaced our main water line from the meter to the house. The brass won't corrode when buried like galvanized fittings will, so if I ever have to replace a valve in the future, it should be a lot easier. These didn't require a lot of torque to seal properly, and I didn't even use pipe dope on the sealing face or the union nut threads. I was unable to find these unions locally, so Supply House came to the rescue.

Difficult to get a water tight seal

I had to apply an unusually high amount of torque to get this union to seal. The water pressure inside was only 13 lbs so it should not have taken so much torque. There might have been a bur on it but I did not want to drain the entire heating system again to remove it and look for the defect.

Garbage, won't seal

Count me amongst those with sealing issues. Both the union itself and both female threaded sections refused to seal over and over despite switching between dope and tape and using a 24" wrench and full body weight.

Be Cautious

Ordered 3. All three were hard to get a seal. Used silicon grease which did the trick. However 1 union had what appeared to be pinhole weeping from the side (female thread) of the the fitting. Either porosity or a hairline crack. Bluefin, made in Thailand, fittings lack quality.

I'm having a lot of trouble with leaks

I'm getting leaks. I bought five of these; I redesigned to use only four. I got leaks at the union/nipple connection. I had used liberal amounts of teflon tape, then switched to pipe dope and now I have only 1 (of eight possible). Even though I ensured that the actual union was aligned very well without force, two have leaks at the union connection (a teaspoon a day?) I read that unions that leak are not of good quality and one should bite-the-bullet and buy the best quality. Pipe dope seems to work better than teflon. full disclosure: I am only an adequate plumber.

Excellent products, fast delivery and cost effective.

I made some plumbing alterations to my exterior hose connection and the products supplied by SupplyHouse.com not only were a perfect fit but were considerably less expensive than my normal supply store or HD. The customer service was excellent . Will recommend and use again.

Female NPT Split

The female threads were cut a little too deep allowing the male brass fitting to engage past allowable tolerance. Needless to say, the coupling's thin wall split open when threads were tightened up. (Note: Sufficient plumbers tape and plumber dope was applied and fitting was not overtorqued.) Buy the USA made union.

Lead Free Brass Union

These ¾" we're just what I needed to install a whole house water pressure booster which worked out perfectly, to be able to install a bypass in the event of pump failure.

Q: Does this union require teflon tape to seal properly?

According to the manufacturer, teflon tape will prevent it from sealing. The seal is metal-to-metal between the number 1 tail and the number 2 tail. The fluid should never get to the nut. If it does, the sealing face has been compromised somehow.

No, Unions seal metal to metal at the face. The faces are ground to produce a seal, without pipe dope. Teflon tape may help you tighten the connecting nut by reducing the friction at the threads, but it has no effect on the sealing surfaces.

No, wouldn't help at all, might hurt.  Recently I researched how to seal unions, and the pros were saying "nothing, dry".  A couple said ok to use pipe dope on the mating surfaces.  Might help to put something on the threads to lubricate & make it easier to tighten, but that won't affect sealing at all, except you might get it tighter. Be VERY CAREFUL not to get solder on the mating surfaces!  I can attest that's almost impossible to fix, you'd have to replace the whole fitting.  I went through hell over that mistake.  Lots of opinions to be found on this subject!!! I used pipe thread compound to seal the threads. Ed

This is an age old question - do you need an additional seal on brass threads? Brass is relatively soft, so you can get away with no seal. I always use tape on brass, because I don't want to go back and re-do it - if it doesn't seal up. I think you may be asking about the retaining not needing tape?? No. This isn't the part of the union that see's any fluid - it simply tightens the inside joint. If you look inside the union, you will see the joint that fits together and the nut just holds it tightly in place. Hope this helps.

Q: What Specification is the Union joint made to? Is there a commercial specification for the joint?

According to the manufacturer, the ansi standard for threaded brass is ANSI B16.15. The standard covers material and the number of threads, and general length considerations for the manufacture of fittings including these union fittings. That said there is no specification within the standard for the actual union ground joint. This is also true for copper fittings unions. Each manufacturer is allowed to manufacture this portion as they determine best. This is why you cannot take two different companies unions apart and put them together interchanging the component tailpieces and nuts. Some will be fine thread union joints and some will be coarse thread joints.
