Periodically replacing hot water heater anode rods extends the lift of a hot water heater. You should loosen and inspect the anode rod(s) every year to see if there's still material left. The first time I checked the anodes in my hot water heater, it was difficult to loosen them so do it early after installation and use Teflon tape on the threads.

I will need this product every few years
My water heater uses two of these magnesium rod anodes as sacrificial material so that other materials do not corrode. If you have a hot water heater, read your manual. You should inspect the anode rods every year to see how fast they are disappearing. If you don't take them out and use Teflon tape on the threads you will find it difficult to remove them in a few years.
