Excellent for fine-tuning a single-pipe steam system
I'm the owner of a two-story century home with an original single-pipe steam system. While it's a powerful system and easy to work with, I was having trouble balancing the heat on very cold days. Due to relatively poor insulation on the first floor compared to the second, I was sending steam up to my already-boiling second floor just to keep up with heating demand on the first.
I first tried downsizing to a gorton #4, but even that was sending up too much heat. Rather than resorting to the old-school NYC solution of cracking a window, I decided on a Thermostatic Radiator Valve to give me true zone control.
This version from Castrads is the easy winner for the tinkering homeowner. I appreciated that all the components you need come in the box ready to assemble. All I needed to do was wrap the threads in Teflon tape and screw in the parts. Boom, now when the room is cold heat comes up, and when the room is warm, little to none. My only critique is the threads on the thermostat that serve as your temp control could be better marked. With the tiny threads, it's difficult to see exactly how far it's screwed in. Not a big issue as it's easy to just open/close it further until the radiator maintains a comfortable temp.
I expect this to pay for itself long-term, as my boiler should now run slightly shorter cycles and send more of the heat where it's actually needed.
