Q: I have an 818z that has been in service for over six months and the issue I have experienced on several occasions is that the valve does not always fill the tank. On these occasions, I have to remove the tank lid and manually push the bottom down. What is the cause and solution of this problem?

It seems that the valve just needs to be reset. Before resetting the valve make sure that the flapper chain is nice and tight with minimum slack. The chain should be hooked to the lever straight up and down and not in an angle. The surface where the flapper sits should be cleaned. To reset the valve after it has been verified that the flapper is not leaking and sitting flat, the flush handle must be held down for five seconds (assuming red chain is attached to the flush lever). By holding the flush lever down for five seconds, the red chain is pulling the tilt cup forward, which causes the check ball to drop and the water to drain from the float chamber. This allows the float to drop and the valve to begin refilling the tank. It is important that the cup tilts forward for at least five seconds as this is the time required to completely drain the float chamber. If the flush handle is held for less than five seconds, the float chamber may not completely drain, resulting in the float chamber filling and lifting up the float to shut off the valve before the tank can refill to the proper level. The red chain serves as a reset button for the fill valve. In the event that there is a need to reset or that the valve senses a leak and stops refilling properly, pull and hold the chain for a long count of 5 to reset the unit and give it the all clear to refill. It will keep tripping until the leak issue is resolved. The red chain is NOT needed, you can always use your finger to push the red cup down to reset.
